Re-Installing Transmission
Re-Installing Transmission
I'm in the process of installing a clutch on my ix. Everything's been going relatively smoothly so far. I've installed the clutch and am now trying to re-install the transmission. I've removed the passengers side tranny mount, radiator hose, rotated shift linkage, lowered the subframe about half an inch. Me and my friend have tried for about 6 hours. I must not be doing something right. I can't even get it close no matter what angle I try, i'm not at the "lining up the splines" part yet. I feel so stupid.
Are there any suggestions any of you can make? Thanks

Yes, I am stuck trying to put the tranny back in. I took it off, swaped the clutch/flywheel and am now putting it back on. I got it out without touching the subframe and radiator hose.
If I remove the subframe all together, the front control arms will come with it, right?

it takes patience and a lot of force, you just have to angle it in there perfectly and there's no need to take out the lower subframe or lower it all. I've done at least 5 clutch jobs and never had to do anything with the subframe. Just angle it in there by raising the rear motor mount bracket first and then kind of rotating it in.
if you drop the sub frame too far the steering shaft will pop out just loosen the bolts on the sub frame till about 3 threads thats enough to get the tranny and the t case back in and then angle the motor down (flywheel side) and then the tranny will slip right in and then bring them up together with a bottle jack then run a bolt threw then you know the rest put it all back together

Okay, I don't see how putting the transfer case in first will help. Also, i cannot jack directly on the rear motor mount because it is over the subframe. I got it a little closer and am working on it now.
I'm stuck because I have to work around the stud of the driver's mount hitting the frame-rail, the tranny hitting the pressure plate, and the tranny hitting the subframe. If it move it at all it will hit one of those 3 things. It's on 3 jacks right now. Any other ideas?

bump, i got it a little closer last night with the help of a friend and 2 ratcheting straps around the tranny and strut tower brace. I don't know how you guys do this so fast

I've seen people spend days on this. It will come out easy without taking much out. To go back in, has to be just the right angle, I hope you have at LEAST 2 people on the ground lifting it around, with a jack to assist. Keep trying
Yea that's what i figure, if I keep trying eventually it'll go in. Was just wondering if there were any secrets or something i was missing. Thanks everyone for your help, i'll keep at it.
I loosen the CAM mount and then lower the motor via an engine brace I have going across that sits on the top/side of the fenders. A chain from an engine hoist goes down and bolts to the trans side mount. I use the hoist to lift the trans, with the proper combination of the lowered motor it slides right in. Then I thread in two or three of the longer bolts into the block, which helps with the rotation once the pilot is seated.

wish me luck
