knocking/ ticking noise

** here is a video of the noise as best i could **

this is with the hood up and the camera right by the VC. sorry it was night time outside lol

<embed width="600" height="361" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullscreen="true" allowNetworking="all" wmode="transparent" src="http://static.photobucket.com/player.swf?file=http://vid16.photobucket.com/albums/b2/katanaweapon/DSCN3016.flv">

if that didnt work...

Hey guys,

So when it is cold outside, like winter months cold, and i start my engine, i can hear this sort of ticking noise/knocking noise coming from either under the valve cover or around the intake mani. Atleast it sounds like it is coming from arounf there.

Its a slight knocking noise and sounds more like a loud ticking noise.

Car still runs fine and i havent gotten any CEL codes.

I got my 60k service done earlier in the year, including the TB, ACC. B, Waterpump, tensioner assembly, balance shaft belt, coolant, and all that jazz.

Ive gotten a couple ideas of what it maybe:

1. Cold weather affecting the timing belt, making it miss timing by just a bit
2. An injector solenoid has gone bad

The car will make this noise usually untill i run the car for a good 15 - 20 minutes. Not loud enough to be heard in the cabin, and can only hear the knocking/ticking noise at idle. When reved it goes away or i just cant hear it anymore over the noise of the engine. Didnt start making this noise untill cold weather started. after the 60k service it sounded fine with nice weather.

Just need some input on what you all think it might be and what i should do to fix it

thanks guys!!

You're either hearing the injectors ticking, or the lifters ticking. Have you had cams installed recently?

I guess I could have elaborated more...I think you are hearing the lifters ticking. It's common to hear them some, but they shouldn't sound harsh. If the lifters aren't bled properly when the cams are removed the lifters will tick very loudly. You can even bend a valve if they aren't bled at all. There is a how to on here, search for bleeding lifters or something along those lines if you suspect that's what it is.

What oil are you running, brand and weight?

How long since last change miles and time?

If you're worried about it I'd do a winter oil change with some good 0w-30 or 0-20w amsoil and see if that makes a difference. I put some in my toyota tacoma with near 100,000 miles and it completely removed all cold start engine ticks and squeaks. I was floored at the first hand results and I've always ran nothing but 10-30 mobil1 in my tacoma I'm the original owner. It purrs like a kitten now even starting up under 10 degrees.

Depending on how loud your ticking is it could be a symptom of a bigger issue. If you have the resources you should probably make a digital camera video of the noise with sound. Upload it to youtube and post a link. World class evo mechanics frequent the site and you have a chance to get opinions from some of them if you have the resources to post some video.

That said the 4g63 is a noisy beast and they have a known issue with having a noisy valve train especially when they are getting higher in miles and if you have aftermarket cams/springs. If you're aftermarket cams/springs expect a certain amount of valve noise. Of course being the owner you know if it's noisier than it was previously in any significant amount.

Common in these cars to have lifter tick. Mitsu makes a revised lifter that doesnt tick but not worth the price. You could also replace with 3g lifter if you can find some. The cheapest way would be to get the JAM spec lifters.

hey guys, thanks for the info, yes cams were changed to GSC S1 cams before i bought the car, i just never heard it until it was cold outside. if i bleed the lifter and re fill should that take care of the problem?

could it be an injector as well? it only sounds like it is coming from one side of the valve cover the left side, its loud enough to hear but not crazy loud or anything

Sounds normal to me but

There is an in car bleeding proceedure as outlined in the FSM (Factory Service Manual). Which conssists of slowly ramping rpm to 3k, holdng it there for 10 sec, throttle lift, then repeat.

If this does not work you will need to remove them and bleed them out manually with diesel fuel

If its coming from the passenger side of the car on the back of the valve cover it could be your PCV valve, I had that same noise which wasnt constantly there and apparently there is a ball in the PCV that will rattle around when there is low vacuum, according to the auto tech teacher when I was in school last year.

This sounds VERY normal to me. Maybe a brand new engine would sound better. It seems that every 4g63 has at least one lifter this is going to be a little sticky - just enough to be heard.

As for bleeding lifters, that advice is only good at the time of install. If the car has been driven then forget bleeding.

I'll be damned. I just made a thread about this exact same thing about 4 hours ago. wtf?

I read through the whole sticky at the top of the page, but it seemed to be isolated to IX's.

I sure hope you figure out what's doing that, and then report back. Strange it seems to be happening more in the cold weather as of late.
