I have the same issue with my 9, but its not that loud. I originally thought it was the injectors, but it seems common as I compare my car to other EVO around my area.

I sure hope you figure out what's doing that, and then report back. Strange it seems to be happening more in the cold weather as of late.
well what i have gotten from all the info ive been trying to dig up its just common, the thing is my video really dosent do the sound justice i mean when it ticks there is one stubborn tick, that can really be heard over all the rest, i mean its pretty loud. tried the holding the rpms and stuff and that seemed to do the trick, but the tick always comes back when i start the car from cold again

Well, if you feel the sound is just not acceptable, the fix is new lifters.

My 03 EVO 8 just don't make that sound when it's cold. It's when the engine warms up and it makes that exact sound and it is coming right on exhaust CAM side. I had the CAMS replaced around 20Kmiles and never bled the lifters. It now has 52K and it sounds the typical 4G63 valve tick. I have been using Mobil1 10W30 synthetic oil but I think I will switch to 0W30 and see how it goes.

Lol i was about to make the same thread. I have been noticing this some time now but someone asked me today what it was and it came back to my attention. I have the EXACT same ticking noise from the same spot. I have a 8 and I just changed the oil today (Silkolene Pro S 0w-40) and I had it before I changed the oil. The car is totally unaffected, and the noise goes away when revving but comes back when idling. But reading this that there are more people with the EXACT same problem i don't think its a big deal(atleast I hope so). Keep us updated about the problem...

I have a similar problem, I use the normal recommended oil 10w-30, and whether or not its cold outside i get the same noise. I remember tracking my car and following a session i kept it running at idle and noticed the sound. I remember it was around 10-15 degrees Celsius and now its at 0C and a bit under and still have this issue.

So for everyone else, is the only option to get rid of the noise to inspect/replace the lifters? This is on a stock motor with basic bolt-ons.

Cheers

my 8 has a small ticking sound. it gets worse in the winter, id say nuthing to worry about also if u have stiff mounts and torque dampener it will make sound seem way worse than it is atleast inside the car. you should have herd my 3000GT lol sounded like it need oil or somethin. lol

I have the sound now as well on my VIII it got louder with the Turbo Upgrade to a FiD Exhaust Manifold and 84mm Ported Red with FIC 1050cc Inj also I do have cams Comp 272's. I made a thread and this just came up in the search. The sounds was there before I tuned it and went away slightly after but I had a leak in the o2 Houseing and I fixed to go back to this sound lol and I will get a road tune to see if it will fix it.

sounds to me like lifter tick if your in colder climates, even with lighter then stock weight oil, itll tick u gotta deal with it..i get tick in mine still to this day even with a built engine, im runnin 20w50, so mine tick for a bit till I get up to operating temp, then after driving for a bit the noise goes away for the most part...when i swap my hks 272 cams to my gsc s2 cams, im also having there zero tick lifters installed too...so hopefully thatll get rid of the problem once and for all ...haha...good luck, and someone else made a good point about your pcv valve also bein bad..if its leakin from there too that could be causin part of the noise.

I just posted a thread similar to this the other day because my car had developed a noticeable tapping noise almost like a knock. I thought I had a stuck lifter but after investigating it, it turns out that the timing belt tensioner is going bad and was causing the noise. Not sure if that's your problem but its something to look into.

my 08 gsr has the exact same sound and is even heard when the hood is closed (through the hood vents). from doing some research it sounds like it is super common but I will be changing the oil soon to see if that helps...i don't trust the dealership oil, who knows what they use.
