Disbelief / slipping clutch
Well, I was in the same boat many of you were in, thinking nothing would happen to my clutch because of my laid back driving style. However, tonight to my disbelief the clutch in my babied evo just wouldn't hold. I have driven/owned many cars and all of them except my wife's Durango has been a manual transmission. I was pulling out into traffic on the way home, and let out the clutch fully hit the gas, and to my surprise, I didn't move. The tach jumped up to 7k, before I realized what was going on. My last car was an Audi S4, so I know exactly how to drive a turbo, awd, manual. I'm telling everyone from experience, that something has to be defective. Obviously it hasn't affected everyone, but there is definitely something wrong with a clutch that goes out after 5000 miles of highway driving, and zero track time.
Has anyone looked at the warranty book entitled Dispute Resolution Process and contacted the National Center for Dispute Settlement (NCDS). I haven't contacted my dealer yet, but I'm wondering if anyone has taken this route.
Thanks,
J

that actually happend to me at around 900 miles once too (i'm now at 12500 miles and it just barely started slipping a little bit).. but it's not necessarily done yet... it may still be ok.. let it cool off.. maybe do a few reverse launches (to clean off the disc) and then let it sit and cool overnight..
then drive it easy for a few days and u could still be ok..
the key is to not slip the clutch much .. you HAVE to let the clutch out fast and with a little jerk... it'll keep it alive a lot longer than if you try to drive it super smooth...
if u're gonna launch it u also need to just drop the clutch almost completely in order to not burn the clutch..
it's just how it's set up..
this is how you can tell if it's really on the way out:
get into 4th gear going around 2500-3000 rpms and just plant the gas.. if it jumps up a little and then settles down to grab, then it's starting to slip..

How will a reverse launch clean off the disk? The engine, flywheel, disk, and pressure plate all spin one direction. Period.
If this was the first time car has ever been 'launched' (if you could even call it that) then wait until it cools off. It will most likely be fine. My very first trip down the track had the clutch slipping for the first 100'. The next pass it hooked up great and hasn't shown any signs of giving up yet. If the clutch really is gone, as long as you find a good dealer, they should replace it with no problems.

Im actually looking at getting an EVO within the next few weeks so im reading up. I think that its BS if a dealership tells you they wont cover it, I'd be damned if I let them get away with that.
I had a 00 Celica GT-S and the syncros started going bad at about 10K miles, they said it was from racing, I told them BS, I drive the car normal and a few people have had problems with them, I want this fixed, its under warranty, they didnt like it but they fixed it.
Good Luck...
