Rear end went out after clutch install

after putting like 100 or so miles on the car of it driving amazing it clunked felt like i threw an anchor on the ground so i pulled over turned the car off we looked under the car saw nothing. we heard a whining noise just before it happend. it has almost 80k miles on the evo. Anyone have insight on this would the clutch install cause anything to the rear end? The shop its at now says the rear end gears are shot let me know. need input. ty

It is most likely coincidence. There is almost no way the clutch could cause the rear diff to blow. In fact, the evo rear diff is pretty robust. It is rare to see them go.

What's the state of the driveshaft? Is there a lot of free play? That is the only connection that you may have messed with during the replacement of the clutch.

well the evo is in jacksonville now im in gainesville had to get back to work so the freeplay im not sure about. but im pretty sure the shop would notice that now if they remove it. I was thinking the driveshaft also. I dont think it was removed or messed with during the install though..

Sorry about the break, however people (like us) with higher mileage 03's are going to start breaking things like that in the next few years.

Maybe a clutch with a harsh engagement point along with driving/ shifting it hard caused it to finally go? Good luck.

Check the transfercase. It comes off on a clutch install and if it was drained and not refilled... Well, when it locks up you get the "anchors away."
... and you heard a whining noise...
Locked transefer case, locked driveshaft, still rolling = biffed rear end (maybe).

if your pour fluid into the transmission does it fill the transfer case also or is it different fill hole in the transfer case? just wondering (so i can get the person who did the install to maybe tell me if he did or not)

transfer case, transmission and rear diff all contain seperate fluid that all have their own fill and drain locations. Rear diff and transfer case use the same fluid, transmission uses a different fluid

when was the last, had you ever, changed the rear end fluid? opened mine up when it was around 60k and pretty much what looked like sparkly muddy water came out, and not half a quarts worth either. PO was horrible to thhe car lol.

Sounds like either A) The rear diff was drained and never filled back up or B) It was just its time to go.

But my honest opinion, being that I have worked on my own car for over 5 years and for an Evo full race prep shop for 2 years, if you were only able to drive 100 miles and heard a whine before it gave out I am almost certain the fluid (or lack off) was the cause of the failure.
