what are other ways of replace the seal? I don't have a seal driver, it should be fine placing the seal in the t-case without any tools right?

Ok guys. One last thing, I just got the new oil seal in. Now I'm trying to install it back to the transfer case. What method would you recommend installing the seal back in? So you just force the seal in or what?

I used greese on outter side of the seal- so it sits niclely inside - as far putting axle inside tcase, just center it and just push it in with your hands.

Somebody already mentioned how, use a socket that is close in size to the outside of the seal and tap it with a hammer. You might need to tap is quite hard depending on how tight it fits.

Set the new seal in place and take a small flat piece of wood, set it flat against the seal and carefully tap the wood with a hammer. Try to force it as straight as possible. Or as mentioned you can use a large socket. Look at where the seal goes, does it have a surface at the back you can bottom the seal against? If it does not you have to be extra careful and drive the seal straight, if you get it crooked and drive it too far back you might not get it out without damaging it. It has to be flush with the outer surface otherwise the sealing areas don't line up.

On the axle there is a metal sealing surface that rides on the sealing lip of the seal. If you damaged this surface you may have to replace the axle. It's hard to clean up a gouge because it usually goes below the surface and you can't build it back up. All it takes to leak is a very small gouge. There is also a tin metal dust shield, this must also be straight and true, not rubbing on the seal.

When installing the axle be careful and don't touch the seal with the axle, the axle end has sharp machined edges. Use the axle itself to hammer to full install, it has some movement in the axial direction.
