so i just bought an evo decided to change the plugs since well who knows when they were done last...the only thing that happened which was a little strange during the plug swap was as i was pulling the coil on the farthest to the right it seperated from the boot...so i pulled up on the boot and re-attatched the coil to the boot....upon startup the car was running smoother...as i was driving through the neighborhood the car felt extremely smooth...as i got onto the main street i went about half throttle probably 12psi or so of boost and then the car bucked liked crazy....i didn't have a torque wrench so just did it by feel.....

do you think this had something to do with the coil coming apart from the boot....or do I need to torque the plugs down more?

i have to drive 45 miles back home right now and am not sure if i should just go and take it easy or try and mess with it right now.

 

ive pulled my boot off several times on accident. but lower the gap on the plugs. I want to say mine are at 22 right now... i had always gapped my plugs to 24 and my last time doing it my car bucked around, lowered to 22 and its golden

 

Which plugs did you buy? Did you gap them? How much?

Thanks for the quick response I purchased some ngk iridiums which are Pre-gapped. I got em from pepboys and they told me not to gap them which I figured was correct since I've always heard to not gap iridium plugs.

 

double check your work. go through the entire process again.

Yah I'll double check I just wonder what the hell it could be...just doesn't make sense to me.

 

What part number are the plugs? Make sure you got the ones for the VIII and not the IX. Also, check the gap like others have mentioned.

I can't remember the part number. But I saw the guy searching the computer system at the store he put 2004 evo it...and again they are iridiums so i am not supposed to gap them correct?

 

You can gap any plug from what I am aware of. I would CHECK the gap like most people in this thread have suggested.

If theyre already there try .022

As far as installing them about 20lbs trq is right... Hand tight and a little crank.

Do not gap those plugs! Just like you said they already are at the correct gap out of the box and you may break them if you try to adjust it. I don't understand why people don't like these plugs Mitsubishi engineered the evo with these plug and imo Ngk is the best on the market, you just replaced them its not the plugs. I did the same thing separating the boot on mine but it worked fine after i stuck it back together. Bucking is a misfire but just double check your work to make sure everything is nice and tight. If it wasn't doing it before its obviously some thong that was overlooked bit imo it has nothing to do with the plugs themselves, good luck and let us know how it turns out.

 

Cool thanks man yah I've always heard to never gap iridium plugs and ur right Mitsubishi does call for the ngk so they obviously designed it to use them.

 

well im pretty sure i found the culprit...the plugs they gave me are the ngk bkr5eix...which correct me if i am wrong are for a nat. aspirated lancer...no wonder why it was misfiring like crazy under boost...i picked up some bpr6eix plugs....thanks guys!
