Exhaust Cam Gear & Kelford 272

Hi All,

I recently installed a set of kelford 272's on my Evo IX... seems I am getting some persistant knock up top in the high load/high rpm areas stopping me from getting the power the Evo 8's are getting with the same setup... I have looked at just about everything else on my car to workout what might be the problem. My exhaust played a small part but I believe the cams are causing some exhaust overlap on the stock cam gear position.

Anyway I am currently going to try some adjustable exhasut cam gears. I was wondering if anyone else had done this with Kelford 272's?

The theory behind it is to reduce the overlap on the exhaust side and reduce gasses remaining/blowing back in the cylindar, therfore reducing knock.

I would be very interested to hear of someone else doing this and what they ended up setting thier exhaust cam at in degrees?

Cheers,
Aaron

I have persistant and TROUBLESOME knock.. with my kelfords.

I was threatened by Kelford with a lawsuit for sharing the information they were giving me.

I believe something is wrong with their cams.

How old are your cams? What springs are you using?

i tried -3 all it did was give better idle so left it at 0. never advanced it, maybe I should have but the idle was a pain to set up at the time. did not want to loose any topend.

Well none of that is positive... Cams are only recently installed.. but I am unsure how long they were sitting with the guy I purchased them from, so not sure of thier manufacture date...

Recently my mechanic compared another set that went into 8MR to the stock cams and found that the intake cam was 6 degree off centre and the exhaust cam was 2 degrees off centre. While I can deal with the intake, the exhaust is out and can't be adjusted without cam gears.

I am thinking of going with -4 degrees once I compare my kelford with stock to see how they sit... all just guess work though. I'd be interested in any info you have xRoguex...

Mine are still in the car - but that would be devastating to have my cams THAT far off. If my intake/exhaust was 6 degs off that could cause massive cylinder pressure spikes. I am using stock gears...

I think when I get them out I would like to get them tested or checked. =/

I highly suggest that you look into degreeing your cams so that you can actually see how far out of spec they may be (most cams are).

It can be done by getting 2 solid lifters and putting them into cylinder #1 with a degree wheel on the crank and a gauge that measures the opening and closing of the valve. This will tell you exactly how off the cam is relative to your crank and tell you how many degrees to correct it.

Kelford cams: great all-around cam for the evo8, kinda lackluster results on the evo9 (at least on the stock turbo car I saw them on). They kinda hurt spool, improve midrange, and die way up top (like you are describing). FP 4R's or GSC S2's are a way better choice for an IX.

I am currently running these cam's in my viii for about 4 months now making almost 400 hp on stock turbo with no problems. There is the possibility that there was a bad batch of cam's.
