Smile just bought new intercooler, need some opinions

alright guys i bought a new intercooler over the weekend, and i was just wondering about everyones thoughts.

Here are some pics to start off with

it is the treadstone TR12, 1 or 2 people on here have used it.

The dimensions are 22x12x3.5 although it doesnt look too much bigger than the stock one to me. It does weigh quite a bit more than the stocker, stock weighs 9 lbs. exactly, and this one weighs in at something like 21-22 pounds. Does weight play a huge factor in an intercooler's abilities? The flow rate for it is decent at 1142 CFM, i dont know what stock flow rate is, i tried searching but found nothing.

anyways, i was just wondering if this intercooler would do more good than not, i am installing it at the same time as the ETS licp and a custom 3" uicp

also, this is the outlet/inlet

is that typical for an intercooler? do you think it is a good design method?

thank you

What is the purpose of your car? Is it for racing or a street warrior? Weight plays a factor for conductive heat transfer through the metal. Meaning it takes a little longer to heat up but also longer to cool down.

Larger intercoolers have larger surface area so that will help the efficiency of the cooling but if the flow design of the intercooler is bad then it won't cool as efficiently. Under street conditions I wouldn't be very concerned about size of the ic as long as it flows well.

I almost used a Treadstone on the Evo, but needed custom piping and I ran out of time on the project. They are the better of the Chinese intercoolers and DSM'ers have used them without problems.
I have read somewhere out on the internet that the stock intercooler flows a tad over what the stock turbo flows 550 cfm's.
What is inside the endtank? Is that some sort of divider or something directing airflow? I've never seen anything "inside" an intercooler like that. It looks like it blocks charge air tubes pretty bad. Is it removeable?

inside the endtank is yea some divider that distributes air to the bottom and top of the intercooler, and i agree that it is very unconventional, i have not seen that in any other intercooler either. i do not think it is removable either.

as far as the custom piping, all i really need is either long couplers or add 3-5 inches of pipe

actually here is a picture of where i am at now, any suggestions? i have an ets licp in the mail, i might be able to manipulate that closer to the inlet of the intercooler

looks like you are going to need some new couplers! Ith inlets on the IC looks bigger then the stock IC pipes

The air diverter inside the inlet endtank is a great idea that I wish more shops would use.

that thats going to be a nasty custom silcone hose your going to need it also looks like the pipes are not lined up with each other. SO the silcone hose would be going diagonal. Hmmm thats aggressive to say the least. Also how does this thing bolt on to the evo. no brackets i saw so the lower and upper pipe have to support all that weight if so not very smart design in that aspect and i would would about shear weight causing the intercooler to fall and who knows what kind of havoc if you were driving

Are you going to make some brackets to support it also?

yea i am going to weld on some brackets to support the intercooler, i agree no way that just the piping alone will hold up the intercooler, not at 22 pounds anyway, maybe the 9 pound stocker haha

well, i got it all braced up there, here is a photo of it installed for anyone that may be wondering

the intercooler does not move one bit, the only modification i really had to make was disconnecting the licp and uicp from their bracketed spots so they stretched enough to reach the intercooler. The whole set up is solid and nothing moves at all, so far so good. Just waiting on the ETS licp to come in to be finished.
