should an new 2.3 sound like this

take a look at my vid and tell me what you think. dont think is is valve tick because i have a thicker head gasket and timing is dead on. also checked valve piston clearance and the valves are not hitting the pistons. it sounds like it is upper end. could it be something with the lifters or could it be just the way it sounds with 272 cams? any one with with some info pleases help, my car has been sitting for 4 mouths and i really want to drive it lol http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p27hQAvNGG4

It sounds like lifter tick from a dead lifter. I had the same issue with my car once it sat for 3 to 4 months while the engine was being built. Once happens is the oil in the hydraulic lifter tends to clog after sitting thus causing this issue...I changed out all of my lifters to jam spec and problem gone.

ya we bled the lifters when we took the head apart to check if any of the valves were bent and non of them were bent luckily. what would be the fix if it is the lifters? should i replace them?

That's definitely the lifters, sounds like a lawnmower.

I think they're supposed to take a little while to get quiet after a build/bleeding them.

Did you go through the procedure of pumping the lifters up again after they're installed?

Step 6: When you start up the car the head will be very loud because there little oil in the lifters. start the car, let it idle for 30 seconds, then rev it up to 3000 rpm and hold it there for 10 seconds, let it idle for 30 seconds, then rev it back up to 3000 rpm and hold it for 10 seconds. repeat this untill the lifter noise goes away (approx. 10-15 times)

I agree with everyone above, if you verified that the valves are alright than it must be a problem with the lifters. You bled them during the build?

https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ev...r-lifters.html

You can use this method, or the Diesel method like the manual states. After they have been bled properly, you need to break them in a little. Try the step that b16a95eg said and if they are bled properly, everything should settle back into normal.

That's what the lifters in my buddys dsm sounded like after bleeding. After about a few minutes it went back to normal. Follow the step 6 directions above
