Evo7 GSR Newbie here

Hey there all,

I recently bought a 2001 Evo7 GSR in BBY and i am loving it so far.

I've been doing alot of reading of what can be done on this car. I come from a NA background and this is my first Evolution. used to own a E36 M3 race prepared and a E39 M5.

The car has 99k (km) on the clock and needs some work.

1) I will be rebuilding the gearbox 4th and 5th gears along with selectors and syncros, but i have no idea of what i am looking at in terms of cost.

2) Will be installing an Evo9 Turbo along with a custom tune and evo9 metal BOV...What do you guys think??!!

3) Also my mechanic is suggesting the evo9 clutch kit as a replacement for the 7.

I really appreciate the help guys and i would like to congrats all of you on this amazing forum....Evom FTW!!!

One 7 to another

Hey Man, Congratulations!

1) As for the gearbox, I'm afraid I can't give you a price quote, but our gearboxes should have the same parts as Evo 8 and 9s (Non MR) the ACD and rear diff however are way different for us than a US spec 8, so be careful there.

2) I wouldn't personally spend the money just to upgrade to a stock 9 turbo, there is a difference, but not THAT much. I am personally considering the Forced Performance Green Turbo, it can raise power a lot without sacraficing much spool up. I would look into it if I were you.

3) Once again, there IS a difference (and it is compatible) but the difference is not that big. My clutch burnt out 20 hours after I bought the car, so I needed to replace it. I went with the Excedy Stage 1. It isn't harsh like the stage 2 and above, and it still drives like normal + it has more durability and can handle an upgrade in torque for a very minimal price increase. If you're gonna do the clutch, replacing the flywheel at the same time is highly reccomended. Also upgrading the clutch lines will help extend your new clutch's life.

Also before you get too heavy into other mods, a fuel pump upgrade is reccomended. Last thing you wanna do is run lean and blow your engine!!

Thanks man

well regarding the Evo9 turbo its a good option for me now since getting a green is out of my budget. But i guess ill have decent gains with a 9 turbo, custom tune, 3inch downpipe, 255 walbro pump. Dont you guys think??!!

I dont want mad power just enough to have a fast street car and a quick one around track/auto-x.

I also dont think the evo9 clutch is good enough but depending on what ive seen on Evom many think that the stock clutch is fine enough for such mods.

Hi,

You'll be enjoying more your car with those mods, until the "more power" bug bites

My only observation to you is that you take your car to a trusted mechanic that takes cares with the clutch job, so not to hurt the transfer case.
In my case it resulted in a small leak that went unnoticed, an developed into transfer case whine

Anything, chime in!!!

Best regards and happy motoing

Thanks alot guys....

The work started.

So far both front axels have been replaced and the gearbox is off the car for the rebuild. will be changing the following:
4th gear, syncro. 5th gear, synco. Along with selectors and ofcourse oil.

Will instal the 9 turbo (Stock) along with an Ecu custom tune, and OEM 9 clutch and flywheel.

Also changing engine mounts, trans. mounts, drive shaft bearings, and replump the catch can previously installed by the previous owner due to weird connections.

ill also do a full oil flushing for the engine, TC and rear diff.

But guys what should i expect with with a 9 turbo, 9 BOV, 2.75" TBE, Blitz filter, and a custom tune on 95 octane fuel.
