i have both cams. i road race the car and drive for fun around town, with a bit of auto-x mixed in.
i'm sticking with the stock turbo or, eventually, a BBK full. my mods are in my sig. i want to still pass smog and not upgrade my valvetrain.

so which is better, my Tomei PonCams:

Tomei Poncam
Advertised Duration - 260 deg
Effective Duration - ___ deg @ 1mm
Lift - 10.7mm Int / 10.2mm Int
Lobe Centerlines - 110 deg Int / 115 deg Exh
LSA - 112.5 deg
Stock valve springs OK

or Cosworth M2:

Cosworth M2 for IX (MIVEC)
Intake duration "272" deg
Intake lift 11mm
Exhaust duration "272" deg
Exhaust lift 11mm
Excellent torque and boost response
Broad power band
Compatible with OE valve springs if factory rev limiter is in place
For maximum high rpm performance use Cosworth upgraded valve springs

i'd really appreciate opinions from people that know what they are talking about and/or have used both or either. "my boi blah blah" does me no good. LOL

thanks!

Really its up to you. Bigger cams would be better... Buy once and be happy. If it were me I would personally choose the larger cams for a few reasons; I would be happy with them if I later went to a bigger turbo, this is silly but the sound , more power. As far as spool up for a stock style turbo such as the bbk I do not think that the cams will make much of a difference between the two you chose. Im no expert but thats my 2 cents good luck

That's my initial decision. Just wanna make sure Cosworth makes a good cam. Howver, I have a concern. Cams showed up at shop today. Here is the text I got:

"Pins=fine. One spot has like an inch and a half scratch I can see and feel on the other one is a decent sized knick. With a small piece of metal missing. "

As you can imagine, I'm not happy. Working til Sat morning, so I have to wait til then to see for myself, as cell phone pics are too blurry.

Bought two sets of cams from members here. Didn't install first set due to a bit of surface rust. Now these. I'll never buy used cams again.

you can always get hks 272 cams. they aren't very aggressive and are meant for the stock valve train

That was my original intent. Good power. Pass smog. Stock valvetrain. But, I found none used. I like the Tomei for all the same reasons plus I heard they are cut from OEM blanks.

Anyway, I'm $600 into two sets of used cams. I have no $$$ to buy anything else.

Tomeis cleaned up fine so I'll use them unless the cosworths can be repaired. In fact, I haven't SEEN the Cosworths, so I'm not 100% sure how bad they are. I'm told the scratch can be felt with a fingernail and I haven't seen the "chip" in the other cam.

I'll know more on Sat. When I'm told "like new" I expect a near-new condition. Scratches and "normal wear" do not fit into his category. Such is purchasing via the internet.

The seller of the cosworths says he'll take them back if I'm not happy. If so, I'm not too worried and will just go with the Tomei cams. I'm really hoping the cossies are okay.

Cool, thanks, but I'm good. I plan to never upgrade springs/retainers. I'm going for "as OEM as possible". LOL plus I don't think a 280 would pass smog.

From what I'm told, basic rule of thumb: if you need springs/retainers, it won't pass smog.

I passed the forbidden Cali SMOG test with Cosworth 272 cams...

2006 Evo IX
Tuning Technologies dyno tune
TD-05 16G Turbocharger
Cosworth 272 M2 camshafts
ETS 3" front mount intercooler
ETS 2.5" lower IC pipe
AEM short-ram intake
Forge MBC
Megan 3" TBE (consist of DP, TP, and catback exhaust) w/ resonated test pipe -----------> replaced with crusty OEM catalytic converter...!
Walbro 255 fuel pump
Precision 780 fuel injectors

These are the Smog Check numbers my car produced...

TEST RPM CO2% O2% HC (ppm) CO%
IDLE 1020 14.30 0.10 MAX 100; AVE 17; MEAS 6 MAX 1.00; AVE 0.00; MEAS 0.00
2500RPM 2595 14.50 0.20 MAX 130; AVE 12; MEAS 11 MAX 1.00; AVE 0.10; MEAS 0.00

And this is what my engine bay looked like during the time of the inspection...

So did you tune the car to pass smog or use the tune you already had? I planned to swap in cat and OEM injectors. Would be nice to pass with just a cat.

I passed the cali ref test with the cossie 272's, gm 3 port, tune, catback, apexi intake, 780 injectors, rear o2 disabled...little bolt on stuff. I had to throw the stock downpipe and cat on to pass the visual though, cat can't be out of factory location to pass legally and high flow ones fail as well. welded a 3" flange onto the rear of the cat to fit my exhaust but even that isn't legal ref inspections are a little more in depth though. I run the stock springs with the cams with no issues 7200 shift point

My car appears 100% stock so I'm not too worried about being sent to a ref. Though Fresno PD likes to send people "just in case". I hardly drive the car anyway.
Injectors and exhaust swap, and I'm back to stock.
I just wanna pass smog. Sounds like I can with either of these cams.
