Disadvantages of small battery

Right now I'm running a big @ss Optima Red Top battery in the trunk. I've been thinking about going to a small battery for a while now, but I've heard some people say that they don't supply enough voltage or something. So are there any real disadvantages to a small battery? Or does it just depend upon which one you get?

Thanks
William

Is that all small batteries or is it just specific ones? I heard the braille battery was pretty good, but super expensive.

I have the cheap DEKA. Its been a champ. As long as the car gets driven once a week, it is golden.

i dont like all the terms and conditions with a small battery. i stuck with a full size battery and tossed it in the trunk. i can listen to the radio with the car off, charge my ipod or phone with the car off or crank the heck out of it if it has a problem or to do a compression test. i also have more room underhood for a catch can and whatever else i want.

I have had my braille since July 07 and have no major issues. With these small battery's you cannot listen to your radio with the engine off for a long period of time. When it gets to -10 or colder I tend to have a little problem starting the car but I keep a jumper box with me in the winter months just in case. I went on a 2 week vacation and when I got back the car had no problems starting. I was surprised.

I drive a WRX, but I lurk here a lot so I thought I'd chime in...

I have a DEKA ETX14 and love it. I am in SE PA, so it doesn't get insanely cold, but my battery has worked just fine over the winter. Also, the "3-4 day" issue doesn't seem to exist, at least for me. I had the battery on a shelf for at least a month while a put in new heads and started like usual when I reinstalled it.

If you do a quick google search, you will see that the ETX14 is the same battery as one sold by Braille, but for $100 less.

The CCAs on a braille battery is 425cca. The ETX14 is 200cca

I have an off brand mini battery and went 2 weeks without driving it and it cranked up fine. I've listened to the radio with the engine off for a good 30 min on numerous occasions and no problems cranking, done numerous compression tests just fine, and just about anything else you could do with a regular sized battery. I can't remember the name of it for the life of me (car is currently in GA right now) but I'll get back to you as soon as I find out.

I run the optima small battery. The good: you can run short route i/c, it is light, etc. The bad: you cant use your headlights without the car running, you shouldnt leave your radio on with your car off, all of the things that use the battery while the car is off isnt really too good. i dont really see a reason to go small battery right now for you, your battery is in your trunk. so you get to reap both sides of the benefits (minus the weight part)
