Ive got a 35R kit sitting and waiting and I want to do it right. I dont want to overdoit either (and save $$$!) for a car with a stock block. I wont have the dough to build the engine for a while

Ive already got the hks 280cams sitting in my room
Bolt on the 35R kit
Bolt on the HKS 280's
keep stock rev limiter

+ bigger injectors if you dont already have them...

and when you have the money build the motor and put in some Valve Springs & Retainers then you can rev it out to 8500-9000rpm...

The 280's will work - im in the same boat as ludi except I am only using hks 272 cam's and on a 2.3 with a 50trim I am making 500 whp on 93 and meth.

I shift out at about 8k

hks 280s are not that aggresive of a cam. the kelford 272s are a more aggresive cam then hks 280. i know someone who has 280s on his car with the stock springs and retainers and everything works completely fine. he drag races the car and everything. so no driving the car hard with those cams and stock springs and retainers will not hurt it at all

Again, thanks guys you've been very helpful. I'm going to stick with the 280s on stock valvetrain.

All HKS cams for the evo work with stock valve springs. There are way better cams out now that also work on stock springs.

280's are not that great for a street cam....then again HKS's are a mild cam...so idunno

Audi2Evo, be careful of what you read in here. It's easy for anyone to come on here and talk about cam A is not a good street cam (whatever that means), Cam B is the shizzle, Cam C ... you get the idea.

I just got my car retuned at AMS and, as usual, they have been kind enough to give me my dyno runfiles. I've attached my last run with the HKS 280 cams (set to +2i, 0e) and the first run of the Kelford 272 cams (also set to +2i, 0e). No change of tune. All AMS did was drop in the new cams and put the car onto the dyno. I believe this should answer most questions in regards to how the HKS 280 is versus the Kelford 272.

A couple of things to keep in mind:

1. The runs were done on a 93 octane map (AEM EMS) and ~23psi boost
2. The 50 trim on my car is clearly overmatched by about 8000 RPM

I will post the final tune (100 oct, 28 psi, 0,0 camgear timing) in a separate thread, where I will also post cam timing results for the Kelfords.

Just keep in mind that the comparison isn't apples to apples as HKS and Kelford are ground on different lobe centerlines, and you are most likely reducing power by running that Kelford intake cam at such an advanced setting. An HKS intake cam at +2 is about like a Kelford intake cam set at 0.

Yeah, that was pretty much confirmed by the cam gear testing we did. I ended up running the cams at 0/0 ... 0/-2 didn't seem to bad either, but with turbo running out of power up top, I decided to stick with the 0/0 setting. Maybe next year, if I end up with an HTA 35r, I'll revisit the timing.

Couldn't really push it on the way home, as it started to rain...

... but if anything, the car sounds more pissed off than ever.
