Transmissin Help

Hey guys i recently bought an 03 evo with 38000 miles about 6 months ago. While i was driving i notice a slight grinding noise when shifting into fifth , and when in wot going into gears 3 , 4 is a pain in the a#@ . Just yesterday i ripped the gears and when going into 4th i heard loudest most horrible crunching sound came out. Please just tell me What are my possibilities and if i should drive it and not go wot alot and dont worry about the noises? Thanks

i would drain the fluid see what if anything is in the fluid. Sounds like you damaged something..

Sounds like the synchros are going. Mine did the same thing just before I completely destroyed 3rd and 4th.

Don't do anymore high rpm shifts and take it easy until you can drain the fluid to see if any metal pieces/flakes come out. A good indicator will be on the drain plug since its magnetic and picks up metal shavings floating around in the fluid. If you do find metal pieces then it may be a good time to look into a rebuild.

Also, check and make sure your clutch is operating properly, i.e. fully disengaging.

I just saw that you have an ACT clutch. Alot of people have had problems with these clutches including myself. Mainly high RPM lockout. Some of the problems are due to driver error but none the less your clutch may be the culprit.

Anyways, the clutch disc may be warped causing it to not fully disengage which will cause problems shifting and over time will definitely damage your transmission. I hope this helps you figure out your problem. Good luck!

If you are going to take it out then I would just have it rebuilt. FYI its not cheap. Check Sheps site you can see there pricing. As far as taking out the Tranny I would not say its easy. Not sure if you have done a trans before but the evo can be a real PITA...

I had my Tranny rebuilt by Ivey.. He did a great job and he is on the cheaper side. I would drain the fluid first before I would go driving around on it. Seems that there is some damage so not sure the clutch adjustment is going to do much.

You definitely need to get it rebuilt....it is only going to get worse...you can do the exchange program through different vendors to keep the downtime to a minimum
