Exedy Twin doesnt want to release when downshifting?

Hey Guys,

I've done a bunch of searching and cant really find the same symptoms and yes I've called the shop that installed - just haven't heard back at this point.

Anyway, I had an Exedy Twin installed in my IX a few weeks ago. After about 500mi I have run into an issue where I experience the following:

1. Car upshifts perfectly, goes into 1st and reverse without issue 95% of the time.
2. When slowing to a stop and/or getting ready to down shift (or go into neutral) in 4th, 3rd, 2nd - when I step on the clutch and push/pull on the shifter it does not move easily and you can tell the clutch is still engaged - basically feels like trying to shift without the clutch. To free it i either need to blip the throttle with my foot on the clutch or if you give it a little gas to accelerate a bit and then clutch right away it'll come out smooth as butter. If I coast at all with it in gear, it doesn't want to disengage at all.
3. When really warm the car shutters pretty bad pulling away from a stop (a lot like you hear about stock clutches doing when cold)

I've read several threads on adjusting the clutch pedal and have done so every which way but can't get rid of this and I imagine it can't be good (shop also said I'd need to adjust the pedal at about 500mi too).

Thoughts - have I just not fine tuned the adjustment enough? Normal behavior? bad install? bad clutch?

Thanks

Could be a few things. If the plates weren't installed correctly for the spring to sit in their perch then you'll have a problem with disengagement. Could be a simple adjustment issue. have you tried changing the fluid since the install and break in? What type of fluid are you using in the transmission?

My Exedy twin did this, too.

Ran it for 15K miles and then switched it out for an OS Giken twin. I haven't had the problems since.

All fluids were replaced when the clutch was done. While I dont remember the brand they are an Evo shop so I am not particularly concerned about the fluids they used.

Bump for more opinions.

Well..if it makes you feel any better, I don't think it is that common or at least it isn't that bad for most people as it's still the #1 clutch recommended.
2 of my buddies have Exedy twins and neither have the problems I did. One of them is actually on his 2nd exedy twin, so it's working out for him.

I'm on an Exedy Twin Sd and have no such issues. And I've driven my friends Twin HD and have to say that these 2 clutches are the most civil twin plates I've ever driven. Provided everything was meticulously installed and adjusted as you stated you've done already, you shouldn't be having these issues.

my guess is he didn't phase the floater plate correctly so the anti rattle clips are making it not disengage properly. I have heard about this before.

From the Exedy Install Manual

Bottom of page 16

http://www.exedyusa.com/multimedia/s...rd%20Multi.pdf

"8.
! 警告
WARNING
多板クラッチの構造上、半クラッチを多用するとクラッチ内部が高温になり構造
部品の膨張、変形等で切れ量が減少し一時的に切れが悪化する事があります。
この場合走行を中止し一度冷やしてから運転を行って下さい。
Due to the nature of the multiple disc clutch, if the clutch is used in the half
engaged position for extended periods of time, the clutch set will generate high
temperatures. This high heat creates expansion or deformation which causes
disengagement problems temporarily or permanently.
Stop driving and allow the clutch to cool down."

often the top pressure plates warp due to insufficient clamping load, allowing them to slip. This can cause it to shift badly. And by warp, i'm talking 2-3mm of warp, thats alot.

i got my hands on 2x 2nd hand HD twin plate clutches, and both were extremely warped. One of them had done 20kmiles of normal street driving, no launches on a stock powered car (i.e. 300hp).

if you get it pulled out, put a straight edge on the contact surface of the top pressure plate and let us know what you find.

food for thought

Wow, got on to search this problem and found I am not alone. There was another guy having the same type issues. I have almost 600 miles on the clutch and those r my symptoms. Also, after the clutch is warm, it makes an odd sound when engaging first gear from a dead stop. Not really sure what to do, don't want to **** off the guy that did my work and second guess him, but it sounds as though I may have an issue.

Sounds like the "seal bark" sound from a start. There's a few threads on this already.

So If they warp that easy, whats the solve-all solution?

^^^Like I posted above from Exedy about half way engaging the clutch. Don't slip your clutch so much.
