Output shaft. You should have just been able to pull it off. When your doing a clutch you usually use a modded dent puller to get it out. I've never seen it come out with the axle before.

That's an output shaft, connects your axle to your t-case. Usually when you pull your axles you don't have those come out, they stay in the t-case and you only pull them if your pulling your t-case. Each end has a cir-clip that goes around it and that's what holds the end to the t-case/axle. I did have it happen to me once where I pulled out the the output shaft with the axle, but I was able to just put the axle on the ground and pull up on the output shaft and they separated. If that doesn't work, I don't know what to tell you, but it may just be simpler to get your self a cir-clip from your local dealer and then put that axle back in if you can't separate them.

Good luck!

yep, as said, that shouldn't come out with the axle. Get new cir-clips at the dealer. To get the axle assy off you will probably have to clamp the shaft vertically in a vise with soft jaws and whack on the cv joint (green) with a mallet or plastic dead blow type hammer- or block of wood and hammer. You might need a second person to help hold up the axle

Now you need to worry about where the c-clip went that is supposed to be on there. If for some reason you can't get it off the old axle I have a set (long and short) of the intermediate shafts (that's what those are called if I'm not mistaken) here at the house. PM me if you need them.

you need to find the missing c-clip or cir-clip, or little metal o-ring, whichever you chose to call it. You don't want that metal ring floating around in your differential. There is a similar setup on the other end of the intermediate shaft that is holding the shaft to the axle. A sharp tug ought to get it off.

I'm not sure the dealership will just sell the c-clips. I remember another thread where a guy had to buy a whole intermediate shaft to get the two c-clips off of it. I'm sure you can find them somewhere though.

Its not a big deal. Use a mallet to hit the halfshaft while holding onto the output shaft and they should separate. Spray some pb blaster on it to try to loosen it up. And obviously find that c clip and replace it.
