New to Evos, looking to make mine fast - Need some help with what to get?

Well like the title says I am new to Evos and would like to make mine faster. I am not planning to do this right away but would like to have a common knowledge for when I do decide its time. I used to drive a 400+ RWHP WS6 before I got my car, now I drive an 03 Evo VIII thats stock other than intake and exhaust.

My car has 93k on it, previous owner stated that the clutch was replaced at 88k but with a stock clutch so idk how much of a purpose that serves. I watched some videos of a GT35R powered Evo and was impressed, it pulled a bit on a cammed LS2 GTO which is probably nearly as fast as my cammed LS1 Trans-Am was. I am wondering, what am I facing ahead of me? I want the car to be built with realiability in mind, it will be a primary driven car every day. I see alot of people are around 400AWHP and seem to be doing ok. I am not trying to rebuild my motor at all, would like to keep it how it is as I am budgeted. Pretty much I would like the car to have a larger turbo, fmic, and all supporting mods. I know the car will need to be tuned which I would deff have done.

What is everything that really needs to be done to have a realiable, fast, daily driven Evo? Fuel system? Types of turbo, other supporting mods, any and all info is very much appreciated!

also I have tried researching a bit, but i feel fresh input and ideas are always a good thing.

Thanks!

Edit: I am not looking for my car to become a rattle trap, after I cammed my Trans-Am everything around it seemed to go to ****. Lots of stuff breaking, rattling, driveability was horrible, got very annoying to drive. Again I want the car to be comfortabily reliable.

Well depends because if you wanna just make 400whp you can stay on a stock frame turbo which will keep your budget down. 400whp makes keeping the stock block not a problem as people have 500whp on the stock block but I'm not sure how long itll last at that power level.

Gonna need a Walbro 255, larger injectors and you'll want to consider if you plan to ever go to e85 before buyign them that way you can avoid replacing them down the road.

Some decent cams, a FMIC, probably a JDM BOV to hold the extra boost and a full TBE with a compitant tuner should put you over that power goal.

Im on the same boat..Do you only go with a walbro 255 if you are getting bigger injectors?

whats the essential mod list before paying for a tune?

so far ive searched and the most common responses are

intake or drop in filter, TBE, MBC, LICP

and that a UICP show small gains as well as a FMIC

Right now as I still have my old motor in the car while Buschur is building and getting the parts together. My current motor is making 330whp on stock 05 turbo, intake, TBE, HKS 272s, JDM BOV and Walbro 255.

My stock injectors are almost at max duty. To get the most out of the tune your gonna want the Walbro.

As for the intercooler Id say get the completly kit. The LICP gives more gains but I still have stock IC and IC piping and on the dyno the flex bart of of UICP blows up like a baloon so much it pushes into the strutbar with a decent amount of force

Like wreckless said it all depends on your goal hp. The evo has no limits. Camming an Evo is still drivability and there should be no rattling or anything. Modding any car sh*t will end up braking. GL with the car man!!

I would say shoot for 480 and stick with stock ECU.

get, hta35r turbo kit, fmic, cams, headstuds, full exhaust, upper pipes, tial bov, mini battery. fuel pump, injectors Thats alot of milage allready on the motor, save up some cash for the 2.0 build >

I'm surprised no one has said this yet, but make sure all your maintanence has been done. Keeping up with the essentials is a must if you want to keep your car comfortably reliable. As for 400whp everyone else has pretty much knocked that out for ya.

Good luck. Just remember you take care of your car it'll take care of you. Cessna just went 9.99 with stock motor at 73k miles. So the motor can hold its own.

Thank you guys for all the input, after reading a bunch up, I may want to shoot my aim higher. Maybe 420ishAWHP? 450? Would like to be making mid 11 second 1/4 passes and then drive the car back home, also be able to hold its own from rolls.

better BOV
better upper/lower ic piping /w tbolts
better FMIC
cams
better intake & air filter
3" exhaust with no restrictions
better o2 housing
bigger injectors
bigger fuel pump
boost controller
bigger turbo
tephra v5-v7
tactrix cable
boost gauge
exedy twin hd

= reciple for your goal with the proper tuner. Get it done on a dyno with a sniffer so you dont have to waste your $ on a wideband and etc

The factory seal on evo head is extremely strong, wouldnt even bother with changing the studs.

Cammed evos dont rattle. The only thing that will make these cars rattle are poly or very stiff motor mounts, and the stock motor mounts are just fine for any power level unless its a dedicated drag car only. Balance shaft eliminator kits dont help either combo'ed with stiff motor mounts..

First thing i would do if i had that car was freshen up the timing components. Change the timing belt, hydraulic tensioner, tensioner pulley, idler pulley, bs belt, bs pulley, waterpump, etc.... knock out the maintenance stuff first. dont give anything a chance to fail. id change fluid in everything also. after this is all done then you can start extracting some high hp from it. 4g63 is an amazing motor and will take a serious beating for a little 4 cylinder.

yah I would make sure to do maintenance first...I would check compression and leakdown also

I mean it's got 94k miles and you want to have close to 500hp on a car with ~295 from the factory
