MAF w/no honeycomb? do you run one?

Ok, so my cars been sitting in my garage for 6 months now and I'm about at the point where I need to fix it or sell it. Two weeks after I had my car tuned it started to break up really bad. After asking around on the forums about what it could be most pointed toward my MAF. When I had the car tuned we took out the honeycomb because we were worried the larger turbo would suck it down. How bad is this for our MAF? Has anyone else had issues with their maf after removing theirs? Are there any options for someone running a stock ecu to use a different MAF? I've heard somthing about a GM MAF converter but am not sure what this entails or if its right for me. I need a setup that will pass emmissions.
Any help or ideas are appreciated.

I'd also say run speed density rather than bother with cutting out the honeycomb. At 500+hp, I've seen cars "suck in" the honeycomb. It rarely makes it to the turbo but yes it gets crumpled and close to getting sucked through.

I don't know why the turbo would suck the MAF honeycomb in, but it is possible to tune it without it. Our Camaro runs a large GM style MAF without the honeycomb, and the only sacrifice is some drivability. It flows the same at WOT, but at part throttle, air speed may be affected past the sensor. It's mostly harder for the tuner, but not that much different for the driver from what I have experienced.

I didnt know you could run speed density on a stock ecu. I thought that was for EMS systems. Remeber I need to pass emissions also.

Yes sir. Speed density on the stock ecu is all the rage now. Most tuners offer conversions and tuning services for it. It's become very popular.

dont even bother with the MAF, i ditched it and went to speed density. car drives way better than it ever did. probably the best tuning decision ive ever made.

WOW!! that looks awsome.. I'm no kind of tuner tho... The only problem I see if getting my car to a shop that can do the install and tune... My car is not driveable atm. Finding a shop that can or has done this might be a challange for me near Atlanta. Damn you Mike for being all the way in Miami

Topspeed or whatever it is, is down that why they are supposed to be pretty good.

If you dint mind going to Florida there are a bunch of shops down there. Specifically awdmotorsports which is where I would go if I was in that neck of the woods.

Alot of the local Evo guys Have told me to stay away from Topspeed. Seems like their track record isnt that great. I've been there twice for minor issues which they fixed but they seem more geared for Subies than Evo's
I wonder how much it would cost me to ship my Evo to Mike in miami...hummm, gonna have to look into that.

Oh I was at Fort Gordon for about a year and was told to go there but I decided to wait on doing anything with my Evo till I went some where more permanent.

If it gives you any idea to send my car open trailer from Manhattan, KS to Buschur Racing in Wakeman, Oh (About 900miles) is around $600.
