Transmission Going Bad

Hey I'm going to apologize in advanced if this isn't the correct place for this, but I wasn't really sure where to put it.

My car is an Evo 8 2003, and I took it in to a mechanic since it was making a really weird noise. He told me it might've been a transmission bearing going bad, and I was wondering if anyone knows any good places close to San Jose, CA to get this fixed. I've heard about Works since that's where the previous owner went to get it rebuilt, but they're a little too far for my preferences.

More info on problem:
The noise is a loud whirring noise that starts up around 35-40mph.
The noise gets louder as my car speeds up.
If I put my clutch all the way in, the noise is still there, and it only goes away when I slow down.

That sounds more like the transfer case

If it does turn out to be the transfer cost, would you know a rough estimate of getting it replaced?

it's 90% chance of being a transfer case going out. There's many used ones for sale, also shep does a great rebuild

Is shep located in Tehachapi? That's a good 5-6 hour drive from where I live.

Yeah that death whine sounds like the same noise my car is making. I'm guessing it would be a very bad idea to drive on it unless I'm taking it in to the shop then.

If it does turn out to be the transfer case, would it be ok to take this in to any auto shop or should I take it to someone with a good reputation.

Sorry for all the questions, this is the first time I've ran in to anything like this.

Im sure there are lots of reputable shops in CA that just work on evos. Just do a quick google search. Dont just take it to some random shop. Chances are they will botch it up.

problem is finding a shop that has a ring and pinion bearing for the TCase is rare, even if you find one it's going to be about $1000

There are a few performance shops in my area, would those be reliable?

If not I can try finding a towing service and just get it towed to Works assuming that continuous driving on it will just kill it.
