Problem: Evo 8 - Welded rear diff.

Ok, so this started couple days ago.. My rear end acts as if the diff is welded. When I make a sharp right/left turn you can hear and see one of my rear tires (depending which way im turning) sorta drag and skid to catch up with the others. This is the best as i can describe it. Its kinda like what happens to 240s when the weld their rear diffs. Anyways, so I took my car to my friends shop today. We took apart the whole diff and inspected all the teeth inside and aside from a well needed fluid change everything is fine. So we cleaned it up put some new fluid in her put It all back together started the car up and took it out for a spin and the problem is still there. WTF! I cant figure this out. Has anyone else ever had this problem? Any help/ideas would be appreciated.

wtf?

How much fluid did you drain out? It's possible it was low on fluid, and the diff got hot which seized the clutch packs together.

Take the cover back off and play with turning the axles individually.

It was full on fluid but the fuild was really bad. It was black! Ive never changed it and now that I think about it I dont know when was the last time the previous owner changed it either.

Checked the fuilds on the tcase and the transmission just to be safe and those are fine. We are going to pull the rear diff off the car again tomorow and spin it like you said.. Do you know if the clutch packs can be ordered/ replaced individually without replacing a complete rear diff?

You'd have to check with the dealer. Give TRE a call as well about your problem and they'll give you more diagnostic tests and will also give you solutions once you figure out the problem.

Is it always the inner tire that is doing this? Why do you think this is the Diff.? Watch some road racing videos, there inner rear tires practically come off the ground.

If this "problem" has been there ever since you've got the car then the explanation is simple.

I had my IX rear diff set up exactly like that - just replace a few clutches and turn them so the rear diff "grabs" with more of them. In slow turns you could hear a click sound and driving slowly around the situation you explained is exactly what my car was doing. It was doing it intentionally though.

If some previous owner set up the car like that, you should only be happy, do more frequent oil changes (since the diff does more work as it is) and enjoy the oversteer
