new built motor high oil pressure

hey guys i need some input i have a recently built motor it has 100 miles on it so far everything seems to be perfect with it except for i think it might have a little to high oil pressure while i am driving (cruising) i am running a 20w50 weight oil reg conventional oil for break in is this too thick of a oil to be running right now in the mid summer if not which weight should i use. the car also does not have a oil cooler it got ruined in the last motor so maybe this is why oil pressure is kinda high.

anyway when warmed up the oil pressure is right around 25-30 psi but driving around on the street and highway it is like 90 psi maybe a little higher i am really confused right now i was thinking about porting the oil filter housing where the relief valve is to reduce oil pressure like the people with dsms do.

is it true that to much oil pressure can cause spun bearings and if so how much oil pressure we taking because even when i boost it it does not go above 110 psi from what i can see.?

thanks for your guys help and input. and pointing me in the right direction this sight has helped me a lot with my build and i did it with all your guys help and my money lol.

cliff-notes

do you guys think it will significantly drop if i use a lighter weight oil?

should i port the housing by the relief 2mm to drop pressure some above 3000 rpms?

what weight oil should i use for my built 2.0L with Ross pistons and Oliver rods and acl aluglide bearings.?

AMS and MAPerformance both recommend 10w40 conventional oil for built engine break in:

If I recall, my oil pressure is about the same as yours. The only exception is my cruising oil pressure is about 80psi. David Buschur recommended I get the Brad Penn 20-50 so that is what I have been using for the past ~5k miles. I'm using his Stg. III block; std c/r; std bore and his Stg. III head with HKS 272's. It's been running very strong ever since.

yea mine runs very strong also but this is just somthing that is bothering me and i was on my way home this morning 5am i noticed that the oil pressure is like 110 and start up and about 90 cruising should i be worried i am going to try and put a lighter weight oil in the car. other than that the car runs very well and clean. the psi is like 30 psi at idle too thanks guys more advise and input please especially from the vendors and some well known engine builders on the site.

110 psi sounds really high. What was you speed when your oil pressure was at 110?

pretty much identical to mine. built 2.0 with 15w 40/ sometimes 20w50. my pressure is around 30 psi at idle between 80 and 110 cruising. 20w50 VR1 racing oil FTW

My oil cooler is blocked as well and I noticed higher oil pressures as well. How much oil pressure is too much? When I get on it I see oil pressures as 120psi.

Btw I'm using 10w-30 amsoil high performance synthectic

Did you remove the balance shafts when building the motor? That will also cause an increase in oil pressure. I'm running right around 40psi at idle (~1200rpm) and 15w50 Amsoil Dominator synthetic. Cruise is around 80psi

I have this same "problem", it can blow the dip stick out of the tube and spray oil out of the tube when at 6-7k

I have the same "issue", seems to be kinda normal with built motors. You can make a little retaining spring to hold it down, or BR sells one for like $5-10.

If you ditched the BS that will kick up oil pressure a bit, also xxw50 will keep pressure a little higher too. I would see 120Psi~ idle during cold starts in the winter. Around 180* oil temp at idle (1050rpm) it would be 30-40psi and at redline 105-115psi. At 260 degrees, idle would be around 20-30psi and 85-95psi. I would always let the car warm up at idle for at least 5min, so I couldn't tell ya if the really high pressure when it was stone cold ever caused an issue.. I alwayse use valvoline vr1 20w50 and never had any oil related issues, ever.
My .02....

Thats from crankcase pressure, and is a sign of the rings not sealing well. it has nothing to do with oil pressure.

an classier solution than the spring is a thicker o'ring on the dipstick

in answer to mrfab. I am pretty sure this kinda pressure is normal when the balance shafts are removed. I think I am putting an oil cooler back on the car, because pressure this high will def have a heating effect on the oil.

The lifters can go full solid from high pressure and snap rockers in half.

Porting the return on the oil filter housing can reduce pressure as well as moving down in weight.

Street cars we use 10w and 10,000rpm +700+whp we move to 15w in the FL heat.

Really??? have you actually seen this happen. seams pretty unlikely especially cuz there is a regulator in the head to control the amount of oil pressure the lifters see...
