Question Evo VIII 5 Speed to MR 6 Speed Swap? Can it be done?

Well im not a big fan of the low gear 5 speed trans on my Evo VIII. When im going down the interstate on my way to school every monday - Thurs im going 80mph in 5th gear at 4000 to 4500 RPMs and that = bad gas mileage =/ . Is there any way i can buy a MRs 6 Speed trans and just swap it in over my 5 Speed.....

Any info would be great. Thanks guys

I has been discussed a million times. Search. You can swap. Call shep and get the kit to swap over, it has everything youll need.

Aside from the fact that the MR trans is said to be weaker, the final gear multiplication in the highest gear is nearly identical (3.18 vs 3.26). You'd be doing alot of work at alot of cost to drop a couple hundred RPMs, tops. Another option might be to contact someone like Shep and look into the 4.11 final drive ratio (total multiplication 2.96), or possibly a taller 5th gear swap. Or just cruise between 65-75 and keep the revs a bit lower, I can get around 28mpg highway and the noise is alot more tolerable if I keep it around there. You could also go to a slightly taller tire, like a 245/45, but your speedo will read a little off.

Steve, very good reply, I had forgotten about tires. A taller tire would really be a good choice for this fellow. Otherwise recouping the cost of the fifth gear swap would likely take longer than the car will survive.

I would vote for the taller fith gear that way you don't loose any acceleration, just drop the rpms in fith.. cost more tho

I drive about 40 miles on the highway daily. I was concerned about the same thing when I went to the 5 speed. As Steve93Talon said, the ratios in final gear are about the same and a 200 rpm difference for a weaker overall gearbox is not remotely worth the swap - I definitely do not miss my six speed.

If you do plan on dropping the cash, steve93talon's suggestion of a Shep 4.11 final drive would be the best choice.

I know what you are trying to suggest but if you are going to recommend that then also advise him on the follow downsides:

1) Wider tires= more contact surface= worst gas mileage
2) Wider tires= more weight= worst gas mileage
3) Wider tires= worst drag coeficient

All of the above negatively impact the gas mileage.

and the inverse, narrow tall tires?

but in reality a high mileage tire would...

but then why is he driving an evo? So the whole exercise is self limiting.

Im driving a Evo beacause 1: i have the money, 2: i love the car, 3: The are a rear car, but is there somthing wrong with trying to get better gas milage? i mean for real, when did trying to get better gas milage go out the window? Anyways. Let me ask you guys this, ive got a member (1slowassevo) on here who want to trade me straight up my 5 Speed for his Evo 9 6 Speed, His trans only has 22K on his and mine just hit 98k what would you guys do if you where in my shoes? Do the swap or stick with the 5 Speed?

what I was getting at was taller tires or mileage tires would defeat the purpose of the car..

I don't care one way or the other, just saying my ideas were worthless when you consider what the car is for.

Who gives a ****? You can have a set of wheels for cheap street tires and another set for performance tires. Its not like you are limited to only run mileage tires if you buy them.
