one of the best DSM shops

Road Race Engineering

has a GREAT ACT set up for fairly cheap too, im not afiliated in anyway, but have had nothing but positive experiences with them for over 7 years (my car club( Alaska Motor Sports ) now almost exclusively uses this company because of how well they've treated us)

I have been watching this thread all day. A friend of mine pointed it out to me. I decided to join, and share some information. First of all, as was pointed out, ACT is a REBUILT stock unit! Nothing more than that piece of **** you have in there now, beefed up a little, and you use your stock flywheel. EXEDY is OEM for most Japanese car manufacturers. Not to mention general motors as well. The EXEDY Hyper unit is ALL any of you guys need! They include the unit, as well as a chromoly flywheel! SWEET!!! I own an EVO8, and I also bought the Hyper unit from www.coximport.com It is SWEET!!! The stock units were ****! They were manufactured by FCC of Japan, to Mitsu standards. There is your problem. The twin disc set up is overkill for daily driving/strip.
Go with the hyper, where ever you get it. You will have all the clutch you need, and some!

I bought tons of stuff for my Mazda GTX from them - good peeps. However I do not like ACT clutches.

Indeed they do, as well as ACT who starts with the STOCK cast iron unit. The EXEDY units are ductile iron. MUCH safer under high revs!

i just got the exedy hyper single clutch kit installed and i like it a lot so far.. it's a little tough to drive in stop and go traffic, but not too bad..

btw, does anyone know of the break-in period for this kit?

also what's the weight on the flywheel in the kit?

thanks!

Renn. I believe the flywheel weight is about 9 lbs. I let mine go for about 300 miles, before I GOT ON IT!!! Now as far as clutch QUEEN goes! I think he should be banned too! What a spam QUEEN!!!!

Don't forget Ogura Clutch (ORC) they make excellent clutches used by many racing teams. They have a 4 plate 1500 HP clutch

How about the RPS clutches? I believe one person here is using an RPS clutch. They also make a carbon one (expensive!!) which can be rebuilt, so you never have to replace the whole unit again.

I can see there is a lot of misimformation going around this thread about clutches. ACT clutches are all new. They are not rebuilt from old parts. We start off with new stock units, break them down, replace the diaphragm spring with a heavier one and make other modifications to help with release, working range, etc. The stock unit (which Exedy makes) is a good design. It just needs a little massaging for performance use.

ACTman, your exact words are "We start off with new stock units"
Correct me if I am wrong, but you are indeed rebuilding a "stock unit" That means you are starting with that piece of **** we got to begin with, and sugar coating it. Is it not still just a cast iron cover? If you can build a better clutch than one of the largest manufacturers of clutches in the world, then why are you not doing it?

Where do I start. Dude, get your facts straight! First off, Exedy makes good parts. They are one of my biggest suppliers. I am not here to bag on them. FCC is not the OE clutch on the EVO, Exedy (Daikin) is! Exedy will be the only supplier on the EVO pressure plate, since they have a patent on the release bearing design. The stock flywheel is a great part, which appears to be a forging, or at least a ductile casting which is up to SFI standards. In this case there is no big benefit as far as strength of safety to an aftermarket flywheel like there is on may other cars. The stock pressure plate which you say is a POS, is basically the same design as the Hyper from the same manufacturer except for the stamped cover vs. the billet cover. I am not saying they are the same but they serve the same function, they clamp onto the disc. Disc design, etc are another story, but I don't want to get into that here.
Folks, do your research. Check out previous threads regarding clutches. There is a lot of misinformation going around. People, clutches are not that complicated.

More misinformation! Where do you come up with this? Our clutches and Exedy Hyper units both use ductile iron. We certify all our EVO clutches to SFI spec. 1.1 making them legal for NHRA (required for 11.99 or faster) so they better be.
