Lifter Noise....after highway pull

Well i was coming back from the drag strip last night at around 1am. Lone behold i come across an SVT cobra cruising down the highway, so as i pass him he decides to floor it and pass me back. Anyway long story short i ended up doing some pulls with em. On the last pull i was dead even with him trough the end of 4th, i shift into fifth and he begins to creep away, at this point i was around 7300 RPM in 5th gear (stock valve train) when i hit a pretty sisable bump (this i believe was the cause of my problem).

After i hit this bump i noticed that the car wouldn't boost properly.....and then i heard it....the clicking of a bad lifter in the valve train..I'm thinking (i could be wrong) that i hit this bump so hard and i was at such a high RPM that i momentarily starved that lifter of oil, and ****ed it up...At this point i was still a ways from home...so i decided to limp it to my garage.

Now If anyone can link me to a thread or point me in the right direction on were i can find torque specs for the bolts and such that i need to take off, would be great. I havent done anything to the valve train of this car yet...so i'm a newb with the 4G.

Any help would be appreciated

No bottom end knock, seems to be coming from the valve train.

if youre going to try and bleed the lifters, the cam gears are 65 ft/lbs and the cam caps are 15 ft/lbs.

be careful when youre taking the cam gears off though, those suckers get REALLY tight. i would suggest using two people breaking them loose.

K dumb question, but which way is loosening the bolt that holds the cam gear on.... rotate towards the firewall (i would assume) ??

* Since i've done it on other cars and there super tight i want to make sure i'm going in the right direction......I lost my PDF repair manual since i had to reformat my old comp.*

yes you will be pushing towards the firewall.

just be careful when u break them loose you have a firm grip on the breaker bar or you can end up punching your hood and breaking something lol

Hit a bump and a lifter failed - anyone ever heard of this happening before?

Would hitting a "jump" change your perception? 7300 rpm and the car slammed into this cement abutment, full throttle landed and tick tick tick tick tick......so ya i'm presuming oil starvation

It doesn't seem to be a problem with group N cars. I don't know why it would be a for a car on the street. Wouldn't you think you'd also damage a bearing or something if you starved the engine of oil?

I could see the wheels unloading and the engine over revving before a bump causing a lifter to collapse. And if it were starved of oil for just a split second wouldn't it pump back up? Unless the rocker arm fell off when it was collapsed but, i would think that would be very noticeable.

OP, Let us know what you find.

This is a common problem with evos with their stock lifters. Just replace your lifters with better ones.

I would use these: http://www.store.partsdinosaur.com/product157.html

Sweet^^^ thanks I was just going to ask is there was anything that i could replace them with that would be better then stock.

I'm not saying I starved the engine of oil, just the head (or in this case that particular lifter). I could be wrong, i was just thinking out loud. Anyway im diggin into it at some point, so i'll post up picks if i find anything interesting.
