When ACD fails what is the result?

Might be a stupid question but I cannot find the answer to it. I will be checking with the stealership to see if they will cover it seeing that I am only at 52k miles but I wondered what mode the transfercase is in if the ACD pump fails. Does it resort to FWD? Still AWD just not active so it acts like an open center diff?

I'd imagine the car would still be AWD however it probably isnt able to lock as it cannot create enough pressure in the system.

What makes you think your ACD failed? Are all three lights on? It may need to re bleed the system or simply add additional fluid.

All three lights are on. It may need to be bled again but it definitely had enough fluid. I did the "key on/throttle down" test and I can here it running for 15 seconds or so.

I'd like an answer too. what if I let the pump die? I think its not working right and I keep adding fluid all week long because it leaks somewhere and just cant find where after weeks of investigation...

The pump ran dry for a while before I found out about the problem but as soon as I filled it back with fuild , I got one light back and the solid 3 lights disapeared.. just like if the pump was working correctly.... but I feel its not working correctly because I tried to bleed it and we got some black goo coming out of there and then white stuff..(after ALOT of gaz pumping) ....and finaly some red oil came out but I could only get a tiny bit of red oil out before the pump started to scream so I filled it back to max and stoped the bleeding, thinking the pump was jammed... but still, I have only one solid light in the dash as long as I keep adding fluid ...like a quart / week...

man this acd thing is starting to kill me!

All three lights are on in my car as well. The dealership worked on it one day, it seemed to work for a few days, but the problem is back. The warranty went out just a few weeks ago unfortunately.

When the car is turned on, it looks normal and will stay that way sometimes. According to them, when they worked on it the first time, it's a chip of some sort. BS, perhaps....I simply don't know.

Never will the Evo run in anything other than AWD unless you have adapted something to do so. It is an AWD car and will never be full time RWD or FWD unless you have modified the drivetrain. I think you are misunderstanding what the ACD does. Search for ACD and you will find this:

https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ev...everybody.html

Everything you would ever want to know about the ACD system on Evos.

Wow great article. You know what it's missing though? An answer to the question. I already knew what the acd did and what the three lights represented. Why I clicked on this particular link was to find out if the acd pump failed, would there be no hydraulic change in the center differential. Would it cause failure in that diff possibly affecting the transmission, or would life be great untill I got around to swapping the pump?...and.....go.

You know what's hard to find? An actual case of a failing acd... I had the three lights come, but I had low fluid. One person I read had an acd reservoir continuously needing to be filled but never actually said his acd went out. Just that he was going to the dealer for repair. Has anyone had an acd go bad?

My ACD pump went bad ... the car drove horrible in snow and rain... also a noticable difference in dry weather..

I replace the pump at a cost of $2606. parts and labor at a dealer

We never get answers. only conclusions... Mitsu will replace the ACD pump most of the time, they dont seem to give much thought about it....like if the thing could not be repaired at all.... never EVER.

For people with ZERO coverage, we tend to try and find a solution or at least try different things before going for the costly replacement...Some people get their pump replaced and the problem comes back 2 weeks later... its a good thing to understand why its broken and what happens to the car when its dead. Can it damage the car in short-mid-long term? I never hear of any particular solutions.. (other then replacing all kinds of sensors). Ive searched an entire night for this and its all the same.... no real answers other than 'replace the pump and its gonna cost 2500 haha, poor guy.'

So in other words, this pump is about to become a mythical item. You dont know much about it but you know its there.
