Oil inside turbo compressor housing

Hello everyone. This is the second time that I removed my intake tube and found oil around the intake of the turbo since I removed the Oil blow by line from the intake. I was wondering, my turbo might possible be going out. I believe the oil seal might be leaking the oil since there is no other way for the oil to get in there. Does anyone else notice this on there cars? I am actually thinking of taking it in to the dealer to get it looked at. That would be a pain taking out my boost controller, but if they will give me a new turbo it will be worth it. Also, I notice a bit of side to side free play on the compressor wheel.

Thanks for any help.

I have seen the same thing happen and I believe what is happening is that the manifold pressure line that connects to the intake gets a little splash of oil in it and as it collects it ends up dripping down into the intake. I don't believe that it is enough oil to worry about and I haven't seen anything bad on this. Usually when you turbo seels get bad your car will smoke and the performance is usually noticible.

What you're seeing is normal. That's what a catch can is for. It will trap the oil vapor being sucked in from the valve cover.

There really should be no oil on the intake of the turbo. If it's just a tiny tiny bit, it's no big deal. But the whole point of the turbo seals is to keep the oil inside.

How many miles are on your car/turbo?
A turbo in good health should have no shaft play whastoever.

From what I've seen in the past, leaking oil in the turbo, and shaft play usually indicates a blown turbo.

If the oil from the valve cover line is excessive to the part where it continually smokes, it could even be the rings. But I really doubt that's your problem, since you seemed to say it was minimal.

More than likely it's no big deal. I'm just sharing what it could be in the worse case scenario.

In/out movement is normal, up/down movement is bad. If you have noticeable amounts of oil in the ic piping, I would have it checked out. If it's just in the intake pipe, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I had a few drops of oil in my intake when I removed it and installed the AEM.

The oil you are seeing is likely coming from the crankcase ventilation tube....the thinnish hose that goes from the valve cover to the intake pipe. When you really get the engine spinning, some oil ends up making it's way through the tube and into the intake.

If you are getting a lot of oil, you should think about installing a catch can to keep it from getting into your turbo/intercooler.

I put a breather filter on that five days after I bought the car. I will pull my intake off tomorrow to check it again. Hopefully there will be nothing there.

Ok, I removed the intake again and there was no oil this time. Guess that it was just built up in the intake pipe and would just leak down to the compressor housing when it was heated up. Thanks for everyones' replys.

I was putting in my ACT Clutch 2 nights ago and noticed that my MAS was caked in oil and there was residue all inside my intake. A friend of mine that was also working on my clutch called his buddy at Mitsubishi and this guy told him, and I quote, "Ya, we're having alot of problems with the seals around the bearings and we're having to warranty the turbo". "It's happened quite a bit with all the EVO's". I figured this much, b/c I went throught this with my Audi. Just thought that you guys might want to hear that.

at 13k miles, my catch can isnt brimming with oil but it definetly does have some in there.... i would recommend it for anyone... its a bling factor, it has its function and whenever people look at your engine bay they'll say , "wats that for?"

I couldn't agree more. I run the Ralliart can for about 5k so far and you can see oil in the straw and the intake and IC piping is clean so it is doing its job aswell. Very good investment because if you have that much your lower IC piping is probably caked with it too.
