Crank Modification

This is a continuation of the thread by Ferrarikid on his crank. This image shows what the counterweights look like on a stock EVO 8 crank.

..........and here it is after I began the work. It is only roughed out and still has a lot more to be done to it. But you can begin to get the idea. It has lost 3.5 lbs of material so far in non, critical areas.

How do you intend to balance out the crank/engine after all the material has been removed.

I'd guess that if they're knife edging the crank then they'll also spring for a set of billet aluminum Groden rods. Still knife-edging can remove as much as 5 to 7 pounds. I'm not really sure how things are balanced when you've done that.

The crank balances out just fine. A four cylinder crank has it's throws 180 apart, so by taking an equal amount off of each counterweight the balance does not get upset. All it needed was some fine tuning on our balancer after the modification to zero the crank out in both kinetic and dynamic planes.
