Why would I notice or smell coolant?

The cam broke right at the intake cam gear. There is no coolant, only oil.

I vote for GSC cams and beehive springs. I have yet to be disappointed in them on any setup.

Sorry to hear about the cam value though. What damage did the engine sustain?

Engine damage is undetermined till we can pull the head. I can say that the head might be shot since there is a small gash where the cam sat, unless this can be polished out.

I don't understand the dowel pin part. Where are they and did you use larger main studs?

If the bores are under 87mm why not hone them to 87mm? That extra half millimeter will help with head gasket sealing.

Finally after a year...evo is back on the road and running very well. Thanks to Project Import and Church's Tuning for all your efforts.

Currently, it puts out 433whp 425ft/lbs tq on 91oct @ 23psi with a 11.1-11.4 afr.

Now just to save up for those FIC 2150s, bushur double pump and Spoolin up COP then re-tune for E-85 and up the boost...lol.

I am in a similar boat to you. I fried the rings on my 2.0 so I went 2.4LR. I bored, honed, line bored and hot tanked the block and polished and balanced the OEM crank. I used manley turbo tuff rods and weisco 1400HD pistons. The shop got it all together, (i have kelford 272s, supertech dual springs and retainers) it idled well for 60 minutes. On the first test drive it snaps a rocker arm, it lodged in the cam, snapped a timing belt and bent 4 valves. Now i'm like WTF? mine has been down 6 out of the last 8 months and I'm really ready to just part it out. They're going to try one more time to get it running right hopfully next week and we'll go from there.

I'm glad yours is running well, and i hope it runs well for a long time.

Wow dude, sorry to hear it was so close then chaos. I actually had a minor issue on the dyno. For some crazy reason a freeze plug came out during the tuning...nothing major happened but it delayed everything for a week while the shop tried to access everything again. Lucky for me all was good and no issues cept putting a new plug in. The one that came out was new and all we can gather is the machine shop guy was probabaly working on it then got distracted for a while and came back forgetting about it not being set and worked on another thing.

What happened with the RRE tune (TBD), I noticed you went back to Church? Was the snapped CAM due to aggressive MIVEK tuning?

I only tuned at Church, I plan to get a 2nd map once I get mods done for E-85 and go to RRE for that.

So the story on the Kelford intake cam...the cam actually broke due to a failure in the cam. Odd as it sounds but Kelford had a known issue of potential cams breaking in one of their batches several years ago. I had one of those I guess and so Kelford fully comp me on the cams and replaced with a brand new set of their 272.

***NOTE - I am in no way knocking Kelford or attempting to hurt their image.
