You mean when you are driving backwards, into the cloud of smoke from your exhaust?

Sorry, I'm on the outside looking in. I don't see why you would ride your clutch in reverse but not in any other gear. These cars run rich, you will smell them from time to time, especially in cold weather. I've smelled mine early in the morning when I was standing outside of it, waiting for it to warm up so I could drive it.

I slip the clutch because my driveway is an incline leading into my garage that is a tight fit. I'm not trying to drive my car through the back of the garage or lose a mirror. Know what I mean?

The clutch smell is the only smell I've experienced with my car that even comes close to what chopdaddy is describing. Can the cat be going bad already?

The smell is definitely the noxious vapors of the exhaust not being catalyzed. Cats should not take nearly that long to light off. Cold-start emissions tests make sure of that. 10-15 minutes sounds way excessive. See this web page:

http://www.aecc.be/en/current_technology.htm

Near the bottom it talks about reducing "long" 1-2 minute light off times to 20 seconds or less.

If you're really smelling the rotten egg stink of your exhaust after a several minutes of driving, I'd talk to the dealership about it. Maybe there is an exhaust leak... and that's not good, just ask Al.

I live in Colorado Springs, and notice the funky smell when I park in may garage after driving. I still have the stock cat, but the Vishnu XEDE and an HKS catback. I pull up a short, steep driveway for parking, and I wondered if it could be the clutch, but I am pretty sure it's the exhaust. Maybe it is the Colorado gas we're all using?

Hey Guys it seems that everyone in colorado has this problem. I checked my exhaust and I have no leaks. But this has only happened since I installed the B & B downpipe and catback. I don't think the stock cat can handle the higher flow to tell you the truth. Maybe a high flow cat will do it. I'm in Denver, Downtown by the way for who was asking.

Cheers

The smell doesn't have anything to do with the mods you have on your car. It's the gas your using. I smelled this also a couple of times, and thought it was a defective cat.

Took it to the dealer and nothing was wrong with it. Then I smelled it again a couple weeks later, and found out that this would only occur after switching gas (brands) stations.

What are the non Stinky brands? I use Shell or Conoco. And since B & B they both stink.

Well to tell you truth, I think they all have the probability of stinking. I think it's more a matter of your car getting used too it.

Because you can use the same brand, but at different locations and get the same stinky results.

I only use 76,Chevron, and Tesoro and I try to ONLY fill up at the same stations because even though they are the same brands, they do vary in quality. And it's noticeable in performance.

hmmm ahh I can't beleive others have this same prob. I bought my car 2 weeks ago and everytime I park my car and get out I smell it. At first I was convinced it was just new and certain plasticsa dn paints were wearing in and gettiing used to the heat of the turbo.... But it's almost been 1K miles now and I still smell it.

Part of me then thought of clutch, but I just recently totally blew a clutch in my old car so I know how that smells and it's not it. It's more of a sulfur smell- more like exhaust... But the thing making me stray fro that theory is that my car is bone stock. WTF?

If it's this bad now, how will it be in a few days when I get my turboback B&B???

Congrats on the purchase, and on digging up a thread that has been dead for nearly a year now.
