Rebuilding Exedy HD Twin
Rebuilding Exedy HD Twin
I can get a good deal on a used Exedy HD twin clutch for an Evo 8 03. It should be rebuilt before install though....Is the rebuild process you can do yourself or do you have to ship it out for machine work or something like that?
Also is a pressure plate removable so that can be resurfaced?

I would say send it off hands down I and having one built now by strictly modified and it had a bad floater plate they could have polished it but would have been issues down he line. Not included in rebuild kit so i
had to order separte peace would not have known that if i attempted myself

I actually just had to rebuild mine last week for my current build, the flywheel may have to be machined so don't just assume it is ok and throw it back together. Check it for extreme hot spots and other damage.
As for the intermediate plate check to make sure that the tabs are still intact on the edges which "floats" the plates, mine were almost all broken off. Besides that make sure that there aren't any broken teeth on the pressure plate itself.
If you look in RSMike's first picture you will see the second disc down on the left hand side has holes on the edges... that's where the float tabs are supposed to be or atleast were on mine... so I don't know if that rebuild is going to be a good thing or not in his pictures but I can tell you those aren't HD discs so maybe its a different situation.
I was told by Mike @ AWD Motorsports that the intermediate plate needs to be replaced if the tabs are broken or are no longer present.
Ask for pics of the one you are looking to buy so you can see it taken apart and assess how much it is going to cost you to rebuild.
I almost got away with just the discs until I saw the intermediate plate and that the tabs were broken which then cost me another $140 in addition to the discs...
If I am wrong someone please correct me but I talked to Mike directly and thats what I saw and was told first hand...

The spring tabs are there to help stop rattle. They have little affect on the actual functionality of the clutch. Thats why mine have been removed, and they also wont do anything as the clutch plates are alot thicker.
Was your top pressure plate warped? mine was sunken about 3mm in the middle of the disc >.<
it's an exedy twin plate for sure, the clutch company just painted it. I'm not sure if it's SD or HD, but stock clamping pressure was 2300lbs, and it was upgraded to 3900lbs.

I would like to know more about the tabs on the disc because if they dont have any affect on functionality I just threw away $140....
Someone want to chime in on this that knows for sure?
The biggest job of the spring tabs is to keep that mid plate centered. If not there your two clutch plates will not wear evenly. I have tried about a dozen twin plate clutches over the years. Uneven wear between the two plates is a big problem. secondary function is to help quiet the plate as well.
Mikes clutch is using custom discs. They arent exedy at all. Picture wise you would never be able to tell difference between SD or HD. the only difference between the two is clamping force of the pressure plate.
