Valvetrain ticking and phantom knock

So I took my car to CBRD for boost leak testing and a tune. Once they got it strapped to the rollers and started doing a couple pulls it was obvious something was wrong. Chad was getting lots of unexplained knock. Very little or no ignition advance and somewhat rich mixtures, and it was still knocking - even in neutral with no load!

EDIT: The ticking noise has been fixed, but phantom knock continues to be a problem. I will update as I narrow things down or get more info.

I suppose it could be, but that definitely doesn't sound like your typical 4g63 ticking noise. The phantom knock could potentially be unrelated to the ticking, but that would be a heck of a coincidence.

It sounds like there's a leak either by at the EGR or intake manifold. You can check that by doing a boost leak test. As far as the bad knock sensor goes, they usually read at about 7 or 8 steady if its bad.

This doesn't sound like any of the normal culprits - maybe the MVEC cam thingy.

That was one of the things I read while searching, but Mark fixed some boost leaks (including a leak at the EGR/manifold surface) and tested for more leaks literally 5 minutes before it was put on the dyno.

Collapsed lifter??? Try doing the in car bleeding proceedure thats out lined in the FSM. Slowly ramp the throttle up to 3k hold it there 10 sec, repaet this proceedure 10 times or so and see if it goes away

next time it starts rattling, pinch the big line that goes to back of your valve cover by your intake, see if it stops

i bet the problem is lifters, the knock problem it might be related to the clacking sound.

I have this same problem I believe.. I'm getting phantom knock at a stand still revving the motor.. ill get up to 36 counts of knock!

In my attempts to stop the ticking, I have installed TTP non ticking lifters, replaced all exhaust gaskets, went back to stock injectors & stock cams (from cosworth272), boost leak tests, compression tests (solid 150psi...), new walbro fp, inspected valve train numerous times, tried all sorts of different weight oils..

Sadly, I have not found the source of the problem, nor the cure.. I have shut off my knock sensor.. I tune my own car via ecuflash & zeitronix wideband... I'm safe cuz I'm always monitoring the motor..
