Question Oil temp sensor by tapping into ecu?

I was looking for a MR gauge set for my non MR VIII. Mainly, what I want is the oil temp gauge. Someone wanted to sell me a set with out the sensor (he didnt have one), he told me he jus tapped into a wire from ecu. Is this possible, or was he trying to pull a fast one on me. Well thanx for your guys time in advance.

The oil temp sensor is located on the drain plug, and wired to the gauge. Its not wired into the ecu! The cars which did not have the gauges came with a standard drain plug. You might want to find out how available the sensor/drain plug assembly is though. I seem to recall that a lot of Evo owners who wanted to convert to the factory gauges had a difficult time getting the oil temp sensor.

Yeah, from what I understood that for it to work on a non MR I needed the sensor that comes with the MR. However, the person who was trying to sell it to me said he had a non MR and he had it tapped to ecu for his gauge. My question was if this was possible.

No, without the oil temp sensor the gauge will not work properly.

The MR oil temp gauge gets the "reading" from the sensor on the drain plug. I had the MR gauges installed as an option on mine, and the sensor was part of the option package. I very much doubt that it would have been included if it wasn't necessary. The ecu couldn't "know" what the oil temp is unless there's a sensor to "tell" it.

Yeah..he tried to pull a fast one on you. Good thing you didn't buy it.

BTW, I have an MR gauge set you can buy..doesn't come with the drain plug temp sensor, but that's ok...you just plug the wire into cigarette lighter (sometimes the oil temp may read high)

Do you know where to find a replacement wire? Mine tore from the drain plug, not sure if it is fixable.
