Possible T-Case whine?

I notice a droning sound at about 50-60 mph in 5th gear, while cruising at light throttle, if I give it full throttle, it goes away, or if I let off it goes away, but if I'm on the throttle lightly just cruising, its there.

If i'm cruising at 70+ its not there either, as soon as i get down to 60 bam, its back.

I changed my clutch this summer and there were a few metal shavings in the tranny drain plug, which kind of makes me think maybe its a transmission issue, the Transfer Case drain plug was spotless. I'm using Redline fluid in the T-Case instead of Diaqueen.

I guess without any sound its probably hard for you guys to tell. If need be, I can try and go take a video clip of it, its not ungodly loud though, like most of the video's i've seen on youtube, so it may not pick the sound up.

Does this sound like a Transfer Case problem? I don't want to waste money getting one and having it be the Tranny.

Thanks for the help!

That drone happens on a lot of cars and I think it's normal. My friend told me it's a healthy whine since there is no load on the drivetrain but the car's moving while in gear. Don't know what causes it though...

It "kind of" sounds like this only, once i hit like 65, it goes away pretty much completely, and doesnt seem to sound like its going faster like this one, it does sound similar how theres like no noise at 55, then he hits 60 and it just hits.

Also, mine seems to go away instantly when I let off, where this one seems to have a little delay

you could try using amsoil in the t.c.
i actually have started to develop more gear whine at different speeds, and some the new whines happened right after i changed my fluids with redline....

next time im going with amsoil

side note: Im really not that worried because the t.c. has fresh synthetic fluid, and the oild stuff had no metal shavings ( even though it was dirty as f**K )

all tcase whine i heard are constant, regardless if you are in gear or neutral. your noise sounds kinda normal. as said try amsoil in transmission, i bet it will reduce noise.

FYI you use amsoil in the transmission, NOT the tcase. in tcase diaqueen is recommended.

Well, it definitely doesnt do it in neutral, so it doesnt seem to be the T-Case then......whew.... I suppose i'll give amsoil a try here soon.

Mine makes a noise like that around 3k RPMs like yours does. It does it in all the gears but most noticeably in 5th since thats when your lightest on the gas. I was thinking mine was a wheel bearing. The mitsu tech didn't have any luck figuring it out cuz it wasn't that bad but told me if it gets worse then they will have a better idea of what it could be. My noise is more of a vibration though.

Have you done any modifications that would transmit more drivetrain noise into the cabin?

Example - aluminum bushings, engine mounts, aftermarket clutch, etc.

Have you checked your tires, I know it sounds dumb but if they're wearing improperly it could cause an intermittent wine at different speeds.
