Bending turbo compressor fins

Is it true that some tuners intentionally bend turbo compressor fins, making the turbo spool much sooner than usual ?!

Never heard of that. How would they be able to bend all of them equally.

If anything, I think people would upgrade the compressor wheel and housing.

I know this sounds strange & haven't seen how it's done, but I've seen the result, a friend's E9 GSR is now spooling around 600rpm sooner after the tuner performed this "pending operation" which took like an hour to do!

sounds pretty skechy to me, the aluminum in the compressor wheel is very very brittle and easy to break, i wouldn't do it if it were me

I'm discussing it with a friend, now, I tend to think that the pending is applied to the turbine blades.

I think it was called clipping or something like that.

if you actually clip anything off you will have to rebalance the whole thing cuz the weight is different

This might be it, I know for a fact that performance greatly improved after performing this "bending or clipping?" I've seen it done on an Evo & an STi. I'm tempted to do it but my only fear is that the turbo would have a much shorter lifespan.

The turbo spins at like 150k rpm, I would not alter it in any way..

Hiring a tuner for $300 to tune your car and clip your turbo fins without rebalancing them will in fact shorten the lifespan of it, by how much it's probably a guess based on how far off balance the shaft and wheels are. If you hired a professional group such as FP to do it and rebalance the assembly I'd say go for it. Once something gets out of balance it can wobble, make contact with the housings, etc etc. If you look you can see how tight the tolerances are to the housings, that isn't much wiggle room when things wobble.
