Question Crankshaft position sensor question

Yesterday my Evo 8 threw a P0335 code and gave me a hell of a time trying to start my car ... general symptoms of a faulty sensor. However I do find it a bit odd that the sensor would just die (no recent engine mods, etc it been raining a lot the past few days and I'm curious if possibly due to the location of the sensor it might have gotten wet which caused the issue.

Is this likely?

will it sometimes start, and sometimes not?
Even though it's a Crankshaft sensor fault, could it be the camshaft sensor?
They die a lot, i had problems with mine recently too.

Do you know anyone else with an evo that you can swap it over?

Yesterday was the first time that it did not want to start ... It took me maybe 15 min of turning the key to get the engine to turn over. After driving home i was able to get it to start again after turning the car off in the driveway .... this morning i was able to start it as well on first try.

Unfortunately I dont know any other evo owners who i could swap the sensor with to test

From experience. Heres what happened to me. i was drivin down the road at 40 mph and my car died completely. After looking over all electrical issues i found that it had to be the crankshaft sensor. What happened with me is that some junk got in my timing belt cover and ended up breaking the sensor completely off. I would look into your crankshaft or camshaft sensor. if you keep turning the key like that your starter will be the next thing gone..

Yeah I completely agree, turning the key like that is not the way to go ... but I had to get home. I dont plan on driving the evo till i get that fixed which should be within the next week; since the code was p0335, ill start with the crankshaft sensor but it could equally be the cam sensor

i was thinking start at the camshaft sensor, if that is broken it wont start either.
It's very easy to get to, the crankshaft sensor is more involved to remove/replace.
Just a thought

Yeah, the camshaft sensor is right there when you open the hood ... crankshaft takes some work... i though the ecu might throw a p0340 for camshaft, but that's only if it "knows" that its bad

Whats odd about that, sometimes things break. They are working and then they aren't.

You asked if it was likly that the rain caused it. I am merely stateing things break there doesn need to be an exterior cause.

So you're welcome.

I have seen crankshaft sensor faults and symptoms quite a bit recently on a couple cars, including my car. If it throws a code for that crankshaft sensor save urself the hassle and replace it.

I had one where it threw a crankshaft sensor code when the camshaft sensor war wobbling due to having the stock bolt in the end of a set of comp cams. Once i fixed that so the wobble was gone the code went away.

i'm having kind of the same problem but my evo runs and starts it just has random misfires when i drive it. I have already replaced the cam position sensor and was wondering if it was my Crank position senor? It'd be a great help!!

Hmm, does it start consistently, or are there times where the engine turns-over but will not start, how many miles on the car? That can be an indication that it might be a Cam or Crank angle sensor and if the car is still starting on your first try the sensor could be in its early stages of going out. (Normally if a misfire is caused by one of these sensor (while at idle) you will notice the RPM fluctuate ... RPM drops a bit, feels like the engine is stalling, few misfire pops, and then engine recovers.)

Did the CEL come on, any useful error codes? (Other than Misfire Cylinder # ... note, the the ECU will only throw a code if it 'knows' that a given component is faulty so its possible to have a bad Crank sensor without a code, or have the ECU throw a code for the CAM sensor when in fact it's the Crank sensor that's at fault)

A new Crank sensor might run you about $70 (http://www.mitsubishiparts.net/catal...ction=690#1805) plus labor, unless you install it yourself. Before I recommend buying the new sensor, check out your spark plugs and if any look 'warn' just replace the entire set. (you can go with copper ones, cheaper than iridium but won't last as long.)

The car pops off at every turn of the key and doesn't idle weird at all it's just when i'm driving it. It has 119k miles and the spark plugs are brand new. The code it's throwing is P0335 saying Crankshaft position sensor. The CEL is on and i've replaced the Camshaft Position Sensor already. It only misfires when i'm going about 60-70mph which is about at 3,000rpms. It makes a weird sound when its misfiring and it bogs down a little.
