Won't go into reverse. Loose end nut?

I just picked up a project evo. While trying to put the car into reverse it feels like it goes in but when I let the clutch out it immediately pops out of gear and makes a bad grinding noise. Car goes into 1-5 perfectly fine. We put the car up on the lift and took the inspection plate off to see what was going on. I don't have much knowledge of manual transmissions but from what I can tell is that there seems to be a little bit of play with the synchro and reverse gear almost like the end nut came loose? The synchro isn't moving all the way over and the reverse gear is chewed up.

Is this a common problem? My buddy said he thinks he's heard of a common end nut problem on earlier model dsm cars. Anybody have any input on this and is it possible for someone with no transmission experience to replace the reverse gear and synchro? Special tools needed?

Thanks
Ryan

I can't believe nobody has any insight on this problem...
