No Downpipe?

Alright guys in a debate with my buddies. I have a cat back and a boost controller and want a tune. My buddy is telling me it is a "waste of money without a downpipe vs just a catback". Tell him he is not a hundred percent correct. i have read the sticky and do firmly agree that a tune with a 100 % stock car is still the best mod you can do. others are hatin and i need confirmation... okay also he is telling me"my EGT"s will be lower and as a result my engine/turbo will be safer", I am not as worried. What you guys think?

catback is one of the first mod you can do and has proven/good gains. your buddy has no idea.

+1...The downpipe will add a few more hp but a catback + tune is a great idea

You will find gains even without a DP, but why not go with a full TBE? An aftermarket O2 housing plus DP in addition to the CBE and boost controller and tune will aid in spool quickness and a few more ponies. I definitely noticed a difference when I installed O2 housing plus TBE on a stock tune.

p.s. if you are going to want a tune and turn up the boost...you may need an aftermarket fuel pump (Walbro 255)...depending on how much the boost will be raised.

I already own the parts i mentioned... CBE and BC... and figure a tune will give me satisfying numbers. I have had the car stock for five years and still enjoy it. So minimal gains for minimal money is what i am all about right now. But some people are just so on my case about not buying the TBE that i needed some feeback to confirm my beliefs.

one of,.. yes.

IMO, my first mod would be dp, then mbc, - intake, - cat back

always open it up from the start(turbo).

OP,.. listen to your friend, get the DP befor getting it tuned.(a must, NO, but its the right way of doing things.)

I think your buddy is a moron for trying to sell you on "Your engine will be safer with a downpipe".

If you have a couple bucks to play with, grab a downpipe and install it all before tuning. I would grab a Walbro 255 Fuel Pump before you jump in deeper then the Boost Controller, Downpipe, Test Pipe, Catback Exhaust. If you don't have funding available for the Downpipe, it's all good. You're not turning it into a beast, you're simply freeing horsepower to better enjoy your Evolution. I have a used downpipe I would sell you if you needed.

I would say you can tune it but I don't think it would be needed with just a cat back. Im sure it would make more power but not needed. I would save a little more money and get a o2 housing and downpipe then do your tune. It will run much better if you tune it with those parts installed rather than putting them on after tuning.

if your paying for a tune make the most of it. get the dp. safer? less back pressure? little better spool but safer no. get your moneys worth dp would do more than a catback.

I agree with that. Downpipe and o2 housing are the most restrictive parts of an evo's exhaust.
