evo 5 gearbox vs 1996 legnum gearbox (4.111 final drive)

I got my hands on to another evo5 gearbox, and i also picked up a cheap 1996 ec5a/ec5w Mitsi Legnum (2.5litre V6 Twin turbo) gearbox.

here is some info

evo 5 (gearbox code - W5W512X6A1 WD0093)

1st 39/14 2.786
2nd 39/20 1.95
3rd 38/27 1.407
4th 33/32 1.031
5th 32/42 0.762
final 77/17 4.529

legnum (gearbox code - W5M512S6N VH6142)

1st 40/12 3.333
2nd 40/19 2.105
3rd 38/27 1.407
4th 33/32 1.031
5th 32/42 0.762
final 74/18 4.111

The legnum has the same input shaft spline as the evo5 gearbox.

Here is the Team Rip info to compare to evo 8/9 models

http://www.teamrip.com/gear_ratio_options.html

I will be putting the 4.111 final drive into my evo5 gearbox as i'm running a stroker engine.

Cheers, Mike

woah that legnum gear ratio is awesome! use the whole trans hands down! wish I could get one of those here. the 4.11 mated to 2.78 first will be haaard to launch. try launching your car from second and you will get an idea what that will be like.

We have been going back to the VIII first gear because of this. Every little bit helps but the 1-2 split in the Legnum box definitely looks to work better.

Mike,

Whats the normal cost and availability of something like that? Is it rare or pretty abundant?

hmmm interesting, i didn't really think about that.
I guess the shorter 1st gear will help with around town driving too. They must have done this because the legnum is such a whale of a car

Aaron, these are relatively rare gearboxes. I picked mine up for $150USD ($250NZD) but it had been sitting in a garage for 2years.
Normally when they come up for sale they are $750NZD ($580usd) to $1000NZD ($775usd), but i always keep an eye out for good bargains. There is always the option of wreckers too.

e.g
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Mo...-351787711.htm

The legnum gearbox had actually dropped the main input shaft bearing, all the caging was on the magnet. I'll have to carefully inspect the gears and make sure it can be used. But apart from that, it looks to be a 100% swap over (internally). Even the centre diff looks the same.

BUT the bell housing is slightly different, 2 of the bolt locations are not the same. I'll put up some pics later

Cheers, Mike

P.S. flick me a PM if you're still keen on an auto box, or even a manual. I'll see what i can do.

Here is some numbers put through a gear calculator:

Stock evo 5 gearbox with my current road tyres (205/55/15 Bridgestone S-02's)
(7500rpm limit)

Tyre Diameter = 1904.41 mm
1st Gear = 67.92 km/h
2nd Gear = 97.04 km/h
3rd Gear = 134.49 km/h
4th Gear = 183.53 km/h
5th Gear = 248.32 km/h

Stock legnum gearbox (with stock tyres, 4.111 final drive)

Tyre Diameter = 1904.41 mm
1st Gear = 62.54 km/h
2nd Gear = 99.03 km/h
3rd Gear = 148.16 km/h
4th Gear = 202.19 km/h
5th Gear = 273.57 km/h

Stock legnum gearbox (with 215/45/17 semi slicks, 4.111 final drive)

Tyre Diameter = 1963.44 mm
1st Gear = 64.48 km/h
2nd Gear = 102.1 km/h
3rd Gear = 152.75 km/h
4th Gear = 208.46 km/h
5th Gear = 282.05 km/h

With my current power i'm trapping right on 200kph (124mph) , so this mod with the semi slick tyres will be perfect

Top speed will go from 248kph to 282 kph!

Cheers, Mike
