No shims needed if installing a new clutch. Might need to shim it down the road. But by that time most of us would get new plates anyway.

I was told not to use shims. They are universal to the kit.

I measured mine

Actual clearance was .130"
Minimum clearance was .140"

smallest shim is .015" I opted to follow the word here...and leave it out.

If you put a shim and you don't need one you will wear out your thrust washer and eventually crankwalk.

Do you know whats worse than the sounds of running over a dog?

Having your clutch slip, not being able to complete shifts because the clutch won't release, and damaging your synchros as a result.

And btw... my Exedy twin howled too. So meh. I love pounding shifts and I haven't been able to do it in my Evo since I bought it due to weak clutches.

To answer someone's question how I measured... There is an installation instructions that comes with the clutch. It gives you a few measurements to take. I used a pair of digital calipers and a level. There was probably .010" worth of measurement noise, so I'm pretty sure I've got it set up pretty well from the get go. The instructions don't explain exactly where the shims go lol. The arrow points into space. Pretty crappy instructions.

The pedal stop is suggested to prevent over extension and possible damage. I think I saw one post on this board where somebody damaged a QM when they didn't use a pedal stop, but maybe they had shimmed it?

The reason I would use a pedal stop though is the engagement point. The clutch only takes about 3/4" of pedal travel to fully engage. This means you have about 3" of "dead" travel from the floor and it makes it pretty hard to tell when the clutch is going to grab when leaving a stop. Put the pedal stop on there and cut that dead space down to about an inch and it makes it A LOT easier to drive on the street.

very true my friend... i really miss my exedy twin carbon i put in when i first got the car... raced every weekend for months on that thing and it last 2yrs before it wore out finally... since it was carbon i could still drive the car on a blown clutch too. when i went to have it fixed they told me it would cost x amount of dollars more then i had to fix it since the flywheel warped from the abuse. so i went with stock for awhile before switching to the QM.

i admit its a demon when you get on it. but that bark is just as bad as its bite. and embarrassing as **** in car shows and cruises. :-(
