Transmission help, just rebuilt now no 5 or rev

Ran into a problem... Just got my car back together and it won't shift into 5th or reverse! My dumb a** fault for not checking b4 I installed it! Did everything according to the fsm. Also it pops outa 4th. Only thing I noticed was some extra play between the last gear on the input shaft and the half washers but there are no shims that go there. Did go to the evo 9 shaft and 1st gear on my evo 8. I bought number 9 half washers which is the thickest they sold at the dealer but that wouldn't make it not shift into 5th or reverse. I pulled the bottom cover for reverse gear and tried to get it to shift and the hub slider still won't shift. I'm lost and hate to pull it all back apart but wanted to see if anyone had any info b4 I do. Thanks for any help I really appreciate it!

What year is the trans? Sounds like you have the wrong 5th gear the the input shaft... and sounds like you have the slider on wrong for 5-R that is the only slider in the trans that will go on 2 ways, one way works and the other wont let it shift into gears.

Good point. The early evo 8's had a different 5th. It was apprantely changed due to spline wear.

Car is an 03 and looks like I did put a slider hub on wrong if you go by the groove line one the other 2 hubs. Is there a different 5th gear? I didn't know there was more than one 5th gear, are they different thickness? I talked to the guy that owned it before me and he said Mitsu was in the tranny back in 04 or 05 cause it had a slight grind in 5th and they replaced the synchros under warranty. Also said there was a TSB for the 5th gear grind and some slightly redesigned parts. I have yet to research what was replaced but about to now.

I took some pics and there is a ton of play on the input shaft which is crazy cause I just changed the input shaft and went from number 6 half washers to number 9.....
Will be stripping the shaft and checking the specs to find what is wore to cause the play.

You cant use a evo 9 input with a 03 evo 5th gear.. 03 5th gear has shorter splines that is your problem.. You will need to replace it with a newer 5th p/n MN 107624

1st , input and 5th spline gear if staying evo 8 ratio if changing to evo 9 ratio 5th then you need both 5th gears
