knock on evo ix.

been looking at an evo ix recently, and got a chance to test drive it the other day. idles and drives smooth, owner says theres a knock sensor and its set up to where the cel blinks 3x per knock. and this happened once during the test drive. it was in no way noticeable without the knock sensor, no audible signs what so ever. just a sign from the knock sensor.

I was told the engine sometimes knock under a full load, or when weather changes, but never has more than 1 knock, and thats way safe. He also stated a stock Evo IX from factory usually has 2-3 knocks under a full load.
Is this true? and is it something to be worried about or am i just thinking way too much?

any thought would be greatly appreciated!

stock evo's will knock up to 6 counts . It probably has a tephra mod map on there to flash the cel under a determined amount of knock. just get some tactrix cables or take it to a tuner to see whats up

yea its completely normal... my stock tune i would log 5-6 counts on any given day with any given fuel... then my xede xflash i would log 7-8 counts under load around 6k.... now i'm tuned by English racing out of WA and during the time of day... psi and where i bought gas i will log 2- 15 counts...

mods can also increase or decrease knock... sometimes the sensor will pick up phantom knock brought on by vibration or noise... drive next to a harley and watch the lil light blink...

if the light doesnt stay on everytime you get on the gas then you should be fine... also when the computer detects actual knock or detention occurs.. you will feel a drastic drop in power... or atleast you will if the features are left enabled by the tuner...

Listen for large amounts of diff whine. It will whine in any gear up to 35-40 Mph after that it should go quiet.

Do a compression test.

Listen for clunks or pops while turning the steering wheel.

***make sure you buy the color you truley want*** lol

just a sign it has a below average tune in it or its noisey in general. $164 in programmer tools & software & a loggable wideband and you can get it retuned and safe etc.. id get it compression tested before purchasing it.. if its healthy then go for it!
