Oil PSI Question

Hello everyone, im trying to find out the answers to the following questions.

1) At what PSI does the Oil Pump go into "By Pass" mode.

2) At what temp does the Oil Cooler Thermostat kick in?

3) Has anyone recorded any type of "variance" of Oil PSI when switching from 30w oil to 40w to 50w? and if so what were you "start up" PSI's and your High RPM PSI's.

4) Does the OEM ECU record Oil Pressure? I do not see anywhere on EvoScan where it shows Oil PSI. I know there is a oil pressure sending unit on the 8/9 but does it just act as a "switch" that is triggered by the ECU when PSI drops to a dangerous level? If so, What is the PSI when the Oil Idiot light is supposed to come on.

Thank You for your help.

Jeff

The only thing the oil pressure switch connects with is the oil pressure light on the dash.

there is no oil thermostat, the oil just cools down by flowing through the cooler.
the oil weight doesnt matter, the pressure will be the same just the viscosity changes.

Not to sure about this statement. I always thought there was an oil cooler thermostat but I may be wrong

I'm not sure that is correct. The pressure of something flowing through a tube is purely its resistance to flow. A higher viscosity oil resists flowing through an orifice much more than a lower viscosity one, thus raising oil pressure. Now most modern engines have a pressure bypass anyways, so at a certain pressure no matter the oil viscosity it wont go above that limit, but oil "weight" can change pressure.

My Post

First off just want to Thank the people that responded. Here is what I DO know.

1) YES we have an Oil Cooler Theromostat and it works just like the radiator does, oil temp hits a certain temp THEN the oil circulates through the Oil Cooler. I know the HKS Race Oil Thermostat is set at 75C I am trying ti figure out what OEM setting is.

Here is a Pic of the HKS Oil Thermostat:

2) YES oil pressure changes with viscosity. How much exactly I am not sure is why I am asking. But it is significant enough to some that they run 20/50 oil in their cars. I am trying to figure out why.

I may just need to buy an OEM service manual. It will be all in there, but just was hoping some gurus would step up and give some insight...

I see from 10-40 to 20-50 at warm idle it is 42 psi compared to 55 psi respectively.

According to the Tomie page the oil cooler thermostat opens at 85C.
