Engine is going back together over the next 2-3 months, i will be doing testing with the modified sump (that i'm yet to make up) and accusump and possibly a transfer pump.
I'll put pics up with progress and testing.

Cheers, Mike

Hello Eugene, I've been delayed on the engine. It's going back together this week or next week.

I've been thinking about this a lot more, and i'm starting to think that a poor mans dry sump system is the way to go.

The only other way i can see this would work is to make the sump and pickup central. But then we will have clearance issues with the exhaust piping.

Once the engine is finished, running and i'm having fun with it, i will definitely look into it further. I need to see if there is room to run a central sump design, and where to route the exhaust.

For now, i'll just be running an Accusump

Cheers, Mike

Has anyone ever used an Airtrek/Outlander oil sump on an Evo before?

Mitsi part numbers :
MD352003 Upper
MD352004 Lower.

That right. A two piece sump just like a SR20.
An Alloy upper, and steel lower.

Here is a pic for reference

Interesting... Wonder what ground and down pipe clearance with that one would be like.

I'm planning on trying to find one here in NZ, and giving it a go.
This will allow me to FULLY baffle the plate that sits above the pickup, so oil can only go in, none can come out under high G corners.
Personally the clearance wont be a problem with me because i'm running a custom exhaust anyways, so remaking that section is no problem.

Very interesting to find out that those exist though!

You'll also find them on the 4G64 powered RVRs and Chariots which pick a part is full of.

I have a 4G64 with one of those sumps sitting in my storage and I did wonder about it when I pulled the engine but just left it at that.

But yeah, going to Pick a Part is your best bet.

I wonder if there would be anyway to source this in the states for some testing.

I check two pickapart yards here in Auckland, nothing like that.

Here are some pics i took at the wreckers.
Both are from AirTrek's (Outlander in USA?), but from 4wd models.
The widened sump is from a SOHC non turbo model,
The other unit is from a DOHC Turbo model.

Cheers, Mike

cool pics.

2 different baffling philosophies. 1 of the pans made an effort to keep the oil down low & only had a hole for the dip stick & a smaller drain hole, while the other pan has a long open section for the dip stick area, much like the evo pan iirc.

If the larger "winged" sump can work, i would rather use that one for extra oil capacity.
But i'm worried that the oil filter housing and oil lines will get in the way.

I will make a custom baffle plate on both of them, using Viton rubber baffles that the cosworth sumps use. This way you can have a baffle that hangs upside down, and lets oil into the pan, but will not let it out.

I will also enlarge the lower steel pan as much as possible, without interfering with the exhaust and other components in the engine bay (much like the AMS sump)

Looking at a pic like this (below), there should be room for the extra width of that SOHC oil pan with the winged section.

Cheers, Mike

Those are cool sumps but it wont help for what you are after. Looks like both pans drain well to pick-up cavity on decell only. during acceleration a lot of oil will be trapped in right side by the stuff in the top middle??

What these are really good for is stiffening the block. would love to have one of the turbo ones. we didnt get those in the states.

I sent you a PM Jerry.

The current baffling/baffle plates will be modified using these:

They can be hung upside down, so they let oil into that cavity, but will not let it out.
The upside is you can bolt on the upper pan to the block, then bolt on all of the baffling etc. This way you can make sure there are no escape paths for the oil except for into the pickup
