Statistically, HKS 272s without upgrade valves and springs you should be fine revving below 8k.

It's not like the stock Mitsubishi valves and springs are made from glass. They're actually quite good and quality. I don't make statement out of my azz, I'm experience it. My two evos have been running the HKS 272s for its life with lot driving. I know bunch of oldtimer evos since 2003 been running the cams (they're the first cams available for the evo in the states) with stock valves springs no problem. For the person called it CIRCUMSTANTIAL, there's a thing called STATISTIC.

Helix hollow 272 cams, 140,000 miles! Still running. Stock valve train.

Been thinking about S2's or Kelfords actually....

Hi all

I just want to know if HKS 272 in and ex cams will be overkill for a stock evo 6?
And will the stock evo 6 valves and springs handle the HKS 272 cams ?

Cheers
Gav

@G20 yup I ran the 272 hks cams before i liked em idle and low rpm driveability was easier, compared to the s2s. stop and go traffic with these s2 cams, its all in throttle modulation, light throttle not completely letting off kinda helps with the car buckin n jerking, of course theres not a traffic situation im in where you cant hear cuss words out my window. Because people here in socal drive like idiots especially on freeway traffic haha. But comparing a pull with s2 cams it feels like between 3-5k, the cams being not as aggressive felt like slightly increase in pull low end to midrange over s2s, but once it hits with the s2s its a seat rest pusher, i feel snug in my backrest haha.
@nightwalker personally you will see an improvement in s2s over the helix cams, iirc i remember reading a cam test I believe the helix cams were on there, and no offense i believe were one of the lower performers. The s2s will help a lot, but personally with 140,000 on your engine, i would do springs/retainers but i would also look into arp head studs unless you have them installed.
@Gavi, yes your springs/retainers should be fine on the hks 272 cams, the valve lift is less then a mm on both your intake and exhaust valves, you wont be worried, but if your using stock valve springs/ retainers id make the rev limit prolly 7500 -8k dependin on if your making good power at those rpms.
@nunother depends on your definition of exhaust, catback, testpipe, downpipe, with all those and an intake, depending on your dyno could be 300hp 300 tq maybe a little more, maybe less. Depends too many factors to rule in that kind of guessing game.

+1 for HKS on stock springs.

Anything else and you're increasing lift over the design parameters for said springs and retainers. If that's a risk you want to take, that's on you. I passed up a set of (coveted as far as I'm concerned) Revolver 264s for my HKS272s because I couldn't afford to do springs and retainers at the time.

In the end, it falls under the Cheap/Fast/Reliable choice we've all heard a million times.
