Screwed my launch at the dragstrip,... heard a snap....what was it?

I'm on the stock 6spd, stock t-case, stock diffs front and rear, stock clutch.

I screwed up the launch and let the clutch out a bit quickly, heard a snap like a twig snapping. Any ideas? There is no whine from the t-case and everything else seems to be working normally.

Ran a 12.2 with a 1.9 60ft, couldn't get out of the hole to save my life. Shortly after that run the clutch started slipping in 4th gear so I went home, I think it was over heating.

Since I'm putting a new clutch in I figured I would do the 5spd swap while I at it which is why I'm wondering what the snap was....if it was in the t-case I might as well rebuild that while I'm at it, but if there is no whine do I need to be looking at the diffs?

The first thing that comes to my mind would be an axle however I havent heard of that being the weak link in an evo drivetrain. How much torque is the car making?

I'm making 399hp/370tq

no problems no noises,.......part of me says screw it just get the upgraded ring/pinion and the new LSD....the other part says wait until the t-case starts whining or grinding.

I guess I'll find out when I take the case out and look at the axles.

Was it a definite snap, or could it have been a bang? I did something similar, and after 3k miles, I still can't find anything broken. I think (note think) that the drivetrain jolt may have made the engine/trans/t-case into the body somewhere.

Did you drive it home? No unusual noises or pulling to one side or another?

yeah I ran it through the gears again down the track and the clutch started slipping in 4th gear. Then drove home, drove the car again today and no problems. Clutch is still holding now so I think it might just have gotten over heated. Clutch feels like its almost all the way out to engage. I'll get my jackstands out.

i think its what most hated quoted.. if you leave out the clutch to fast it feels like you dropped the engine on the ground.. lol. i remember the first time i did that with AWD, i got out to check if the transmission was still attached to the car.

If you aren't hearing any whining or bad sounds from the tcase I would upgrade the clutch/trans and leave the tcase until you know you need to upgrade it. Sure, you may eventually blow it up, but its not going to save you much labor to do the tcase now. If you are planning to regularly drag race then you might as well upgrade it I guess, because the OEM tcase won't last long on the drag strip. One of the reasons I haven't done much launching with my OEM tcase.

I don't plan on regularly drag racing..... but probably at least a couple days a summer. I want to be able to use the car.

I think I'm just going to do clutch and 5spd swap then safe money so I can get the actual improved ring and pinion gear instead of just oem mitsu again.
