O-Ring Block?

Hey guys,

I am putting a Buschur 2.1 block in my car next week sometime, and I was wondering what your thoughts were on O-ringing the block. Is it worth doing, or will L19 headstuds and MLS headgasket be sufficient for 35-40psi applications?

Thanks!

Different engine, but when doing my build, for the price I saw no reason to not o-ring my block. Its cheap, its great insurance at high pressure. Do it.

In my opinion it is. If not done correctly, the convenient and low price of $400 can turn into a much more expensive problem. Stock head gasket and l19's and call it a day. The only time I would see the need for an oringed block would be 50+ psi.

I agree to a point - though if I couldn't trust my machine shop to o-ring, I sure wouldn't trust them to build an engine?

In either case, it's extra insurance, probably not necessary, but not that expensive. I chose to do it, others chose not. Both ways work

I would say at those levels its not totally needed but I agree a bit with Chkmgnt as to its cheap insurance why not do it.

I looked into doing it on my build and here is what my engine shop told me.

Hehe, No, no reason to O-ring your block. I could answer that with this question…do you have reason to believe that you will be lifting the heads?

We “step deck” all of our blocks that means the sleeves are sticking up about .002” above deck surface to help out with sealing up the combustion chamber.

We charge 350.00 to O-ring but we O-ring the block and the head. Best way to do it is with a copper gasket which is too high maintenance for a street application.

I can get this done for about $200 at a local reputable machine shop. I think I'm gonna go through with it and just have it done. Thanks for the input guys.
