fluctuating boost at WOT

So I pulled off my intake to clean my maf sensor today. Car runs better for sure, didn't fix the problem I wanted it to, but still runs better. So I went for a test drive after i got it all put back together to see if everything was working correctly. I noticed at wot the boost pressure fluctuates from 21-19psi and back and forth. It used to spike to 21 and hold at 19 solid. I had to take the upper intercooler piping off to get to some of the connections for the k&n intake I have. Sound like boost leak to you guys? Like I didn't get the hoses back on good enough?

I had the same problem, mine ended up being the wga spring. It would almost flicker because it was surging so bad.

Mine does that too. I hit 25psi, and in the upper rpm's it starts fluctuating up and down like +/- 1psi. I was wondering what could make it do that.

Just weird cuz it didnt do it until I took it all apart and put it back together which made me think boost leak.

What sort of K&N intake did you install?

How are you controlling boost?

The K&N Typhoon intake system is absolute garbage. Do a search on it focusing older threads and posts from about five or six years ago. If you have the Typhoon then that could be a contributing factor to your car running funky. K&N filters per se are fine. It is just that intake system that is a dog.

Barring a slight boost leak, I tend to think that your boost oscillation problem may be due to your wastegate not being sufficiently preloaded. So, the flapper valve is not being positively controlled by the actuator.

Is the ECU controlling boost via the boost control solenoid, or do you have a manual boost controller installed?

The intake is a typhoon and was on the car when I purchased it. As far as I can tell it's being controlled by the ecu. I can't find an mbc anywhere. So I assume it's the ecu. I just went for another drive and now it's just hitting 19 and sitting there. Not even spiking to 21 like usual. So freaking weird. Is there a how to on setting up the wg actuator?

Just went for another drive and now it's hitting 19 and staying there, just not spiking to 21 like it was. I reset the ecu when I cleaned the maf. Think it was just the ecu figuring its s*** out?

Oops double post lol. But the bit about the ecu still stands. That possible issue?

Look 3# of creep is not that bad if you are experiencing colder ambient air temps in your area than you were up until recently, or if there is a big difference between high daytime temps and colder morning and evening temps. The air temp swings can freak the ECU out a bit. The Ecu has to relearn for the clean MAF sensor as well. The K&N Typhoon kit is famous for causing AFR anomalies as well. If you couple these factors with not enough WG spring pressure(preload) then your problem is more understandable.

True, unless your remove the flap by the recirculating BOV pipe. I did this and it was just another intake that flowed a lot better and drove a lot better! It was a pain to do, but worth it. I ended up selling it and getting a Perrin. Perrin IMHO is the way to go unless you have a FP.

well went to feed the gf's cat and i'm 99% sure I have a boost leak. Boost drops off after hitting 19lbs and just keeps dropping. I'll mess with the piping and hoses tomorrow after work and see if I can figure anything out.
