For the third time

For the third time i let my car warm up for 5 minutes due to the freezing temps. My car back fired twice and when i was getting in it there was a heavy smell of gas. Any ideas what this is . I am thinking its normal with the other things it does.

I haven't seen any of those issues. Even in the coldest weather so far (about 0 degrees f) it's fired right up and been drivable within a couple of minutes. It will sometimes give off a small pop (like a mini-backfire) while first starting to warm up, but nothing worth worying about.

I hate to point at the obvious here but that sounds like poor gas, or something along those lines. I wouldn't feel bad about running some injector cleaner. It is a smart thing to do with the crappy gas we are given.

Since there was a "heavy smell of gas" (unburned fuel), I'd check your plugs.

probably an icing phenomenon due to hi moisture/low temp ambient conditions. Some cars have heated intake areas to prevent that (Subaru for one). I've noticed this phenomenon in some other modern cars (non-Mitsu) when letting the car sitting out to idle to defrost the windows and it suddenly stops runinning - it used to be common on carburated cars, eg carb icing.

Drove mine today for the first time at 10 deg. with no problems on a stock EVO. I only let it warm up for about 60 seconds before I started moving. So I'd say your situation is not normal.
