timing belt job. what is needed/not?
I am going to be replacing the timing belt on my Evo 8. I need to purchase the parts. I see the timing belt kits the vendors sell have the idler pullys, tensioners and all that. I am a tech for lexus and its very rare that a tensioner or idler needs to be replaced so we simply do the belts waterpump and seals on every car. I plan to do the belts and the waterpump but are the other items really needed? do they go bad that often that they need to be replaced every 60k?
Sorry for the lack of my Mitsubishi knowledge. I know the Hondas I replace the tensioner on. Just seeing what most do around here.

Most of the time, it's because you have to remove it anyway to access the other parts.
Might as well change them.
You could always go the other route and use gates stuff from rock auto .( cheaper in price).

I hear of a few people who have lost water pumps and occasionally a failed tensioner. However, a failed tensioner on an interference engines is not something you want.
When I did my 60K the tensioner pulley for the b-belt was showing signs of distress. I've never heard of anyone else encountering this.
If you have another vehicle and are wanting to save money I'd suggest pulling it down, inspecting the parts and then ordering whatever you think you need. However, I repeat, I would recommend a new tensioner. They may not fail often but when they do it is bad news - its not worth taking the chance.
Also, get that tool that fits between the sprockets and holds them lined up with the timing marks.

well your a lexus tech so unless you spend your time doing lof's on the lube rack im sure you know what happens when you spin a timing belt on an interference engine.
in other spend the money when you could save yourself money in the long run
